Legal Research Tutoring FAQ
Legal research, sometimes taught as legal research and writing, is a mainstay of the first-year law school curriculum. This course, which requires students to write a variety of assignments from many different perspectives, teaches students how to write memos, briefs, and other legal documents. It also instructs students on how to conduct legal research, which requires them to use different tools and techniques from the ones used in most undergraduate programs. These can be challenging at first, but Varsity Tutors can help students find a legal research tutor in their area. Legal research tutoring can help a student learn how to use the appropriate tools and how to write for legal classes.
Most legal research starts by looking at statutes. These are generally available through a number of sources, but most students use private online legal research services. These legal research providers are all very similar in that they provide some natural language" search and also allow for more robust searching using a system known as terms and connectors. By using the latter, students learn to find more precise and applicable results, and to find documents that answer their specific questions. The search will also find opinions written by judges in most of the courts across the country. These opinions, which interpret statutes and decide cases, will form the majority of most legal research. Legal research tutoring can help students learn to use terms and connectors in order to get the best results, and to understand how and when to use judicial opinions and what opinions really say.
Legal research calls for a writing style that is different from most other disciplines. It uses a style called IRAC or TRAC, which stands for Issue/Topic, Rule, Application, Conclusion. It is a difficult style to master, and many students struggle for several assignments. Legal research tutoring can enable students to get immediate feedback on their work and one-on-one support for any of their struggles. Learning how to do research and write can be the hardest part of excelling academically, but a private tutor can provide the help and expertise to help students succeed. Tutors are great at guiding students in the right direction. They can assist in filling in critical gaps during a one-to-one session that better serves the individual when they are under intense pressure to grasp the knowledge quickly.
By now, students are typically very adept at writing, but this new style can still be confusing. Many students may be discouraged, and even reconsider their legal aspirations. The assistance of a private tutor can help students make the connections they may be struggling to make. The right tutor will help students understand the difference between and meanings of various common judicial opinions. They can help a rising law student to fine-tune their writing skills to fulfill the requirements of the class and the legal environment in general. There are many concepts involved, but even a tough new topic can be mastered given the right level of personalized help.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with the right tutor. With a tutor who has mastered legal research and writing, students can maximize the chances of catching on quickly. Legal tutors are upper-level law students and lawyers who can work with newer students to understand their new research tools and this unique style of writing. They can help students learn how to manage their assignments without becoming overwhelmed and can show students how to tell what is most important in their research. Through tutoring, students can get the help they need to excel in their first-year courses and master law school exams. Recent Legal Research Tutoring Session Notes
We went over some SAT test taking strategies. Some of the problems were a bit tough, but the student did very well. Just takes some practice learning the strategies and when to use them.
I also enjoyed helping her with some Spanish!
Spent the day reviewing for physics, mainly focusing on kinematics, vectors, projectile motion, and Newton's laws. In doing so, we went through difficult, integrative problems by having the girls attempt them first, and then helping them along if necessary. An extensive review homework assignment was given, which we will discuss on our last tutoring session this coming Friday.
I met with Student 1and 2 starting at 10:05am until approximately 12:30pm. We first went over essay strategies and ways of improving their written prompts. We followed that with a little bit of English section strategies since that section needs the greatest attention now. They have been assigned a test to complete before Wednesday and we will revisit Science and Math section strategies.
The student and I went over dividing fractions. She seemed to have a very strong grasp of the topic. While she seemed at ease with doing her work the long way, I am hoping that over time I will be able to get her to understand the concept of cross-cancellation. She started having a stronger understanding towards the end of our session, so I think that teaching her this concept is feasible over our time working together.
Today we covered Direct Object Pronouns and Indirect Object Pronouns. We also went over the HW from the last class and reviewed some irregular verbs in past tense (preterito). In addition to this, we went over the rules of the conjugation of the verb gustar and those that are similar to it. To conclude, we discussed some cultural readings about the Caribbean, read a poem and discuss it until the last minute.
Finished the rest of his packet. Started reviewing equations and when to use each. I took a picture of all his equations and then finish reviewing them with him Tuesday.
