Skippyjon Jones And Being True To Myself by Marissa - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

Skippyjon Jones taught me to never stop imagining. Skippyjon Jones is a picture book series written by Judy Schachner which follows a kitten who imagines himself to be a sword-fighting chihuahua that goes off on grand adventures. I grew up with my father reading these books to me every night before bed, and they have truly left a lasting impact on my life. Overcoming the fear of judgment and staying true to what makes you happy is embodied by the main character of my favorite childhood book series. As I enter different stages of my life, I find myself holding onto the values that I learned through Skippyjon Jones, from dressing unique, to my hobbies, to even my choice of career. I have never once compromised on who I am, because of the thoughts and opinions of others.

I plan on pursuing a career in a creative field, specifically animation. As I grew up, I had always wanted to pursue art for my future. People have often tried to discourage me, telling me it is impractical and that I would regret my choice, but like Skippyjon Jones, I will stick with my choices and follow what brings me happiness despite others’ skepticism. Skippyjon Jones is a part of some of my earliest memories and has taught me to be myself and to follow my dreams no matter how challenging they may seem. He has given me the resolve to pursue the career of my choice, and now I’m applying to art schools. What a grand adventure that will be.
