I'm speaking a foreign language to them. I get a personal sense of satisfaction when someone stops and goes, "oh, I've never thought of it that way before - now it all makes sense." In addition, often times I feel the education system here is misunderstood and students spend too much time memorizing "steps" to a subject rather than learning it, and inevitably end up failing when they are required to utilize the knowledge in future, more advanced work. In my experience, proper explanations toward understand subjects builds a much more lasting impression and life-long knowledge than short-term exam preparation could ever achieve.

I am passionate about education, learning, teaching, and specifically literatures and languages. I have experience as an ESL teacher for young children and teens, as well as experience working as a Writing Consultant at my undergraduate institution. I'm Czarina Alfonso, a junior at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. In high school, I was a honors student with membership in the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Math Honor Society. I was also a member of my school's Diversity Council and president of the medical club. Since I'm currently a chemistry major/premed student, I have lots of experience with STEM related courses (AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Calculus, AP Statistics). I've also taken both AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature. In addition to my AP course load in high school, I also studied for multiple SAT subject tests (Bio 790, Math 2 770, Chem 770) and the SAT (770M, 770ERW). Outside of academics, I did lots of volunteer work (founded nonprofit called Give It a Shot that raises money to provide pneumonia vaccines to daycare aged children in the Philippines, worked at local hospital, peer tutored at school) and played a sport (fencing) at a national level. I am currently a high school counselor and the combination of all of my experience gives me a unique window into the world of education and college entrance.
