I am a graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology with a master's in Game Design and Development. My passions lie in everything related to games and mathematics. In the past, I have tutored various subjects in mathematics throughout high school and college, including but not limited to Algebra, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Mathematics of Graphical Simulation, and Linear Algebra. As for technology, I am more than happy to reach out for help in Web Development (HTML, CSS, Javascript) or C# programming. I believe that every person can learn any topic. While every individual has different tastes, strengths, and weaknesses, there is no such thing as an "incapability" to know a subject. Education often possesses a guise of anti-fun, but I can promise you that all topics can be engaging, and I am willing to show you how engaging mathematics and technology can be. As a Game Designer, I have a deep interest in both playing games and making games. This includes games of all kinds: video games, board games, tabletop role-playing games, trading card games, miniatures, and even some sports like tennis or ping pong. Games act as a fantastic teaching tool. They teach by design without users recognizing. It is always a satisfying moment when somebody says "I learned that word from Magic" or "D&D taught me that." Remember: you can succeed. If something is important to you, then it's always worthwhile.

AP Pre-Calculus covers function analysis, trigonometry, and modeling at a pace that can overwhelm students who've only seen these topics casually. Joey's scientific computing work at Penn demanded fluency with polynomial behavior, transformations, and rate-of-change reasoning — exactly the skills this course tests. When I was in high school, I remember seeing the joy of my math teachers when they would teach in class. This inspired me to become a high school math teacher. The first step was becoming a peer tutor to my classmates. This lead to tutoring math to college students. Then tutoring students while working as a TA. Then I worked as a data scientist which not only did I understand more how to apply math in the workspace, but also learned how to explain math concepts to coworkers without a strong math background. This helped me to shape my tutoring philosophy to relate to the person being tutored and this opened the door to me teaching high school calculus 1 & calculus 2! I am currently teaching precalculus at a community college.

My previous tutoring experiences have primarily focused on college level physics, math, and chemistry; AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP Chemistry; the ACT and SAT college entrance exams; general mathematics at the high school level; and middle school level math and english for state standardized testing. Hi, I'm Laura! I graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor's of science degree in mathematics and a minor in sociology. There, I earned the Frances B. Huston award, the most prestigious award given to graduating students, for excellence in academics, leadership, and community service. From there, I became a student at the University of Washington (UW), earning my Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and a position as a PhD student in the department. I was also awarded the Carl S. Pearson award for academic excellence in the Master's program. I have been working as a PhD student since then, with expertise in all types of math including algebra, calculus, linear algebra, and numerical analysis, among others. I also have years of experience coding in both python and matlab! I spent three years as an undergraduate teaching assistant, helping teach both high school and college level math classes. I also taught multiple sections of calculus at the University of Washington as a Master's student, and I have served as a teaching assistant throughout my time at UW. My favorite thing about these positions were the opportunities to work one-on-one with students, developing new approaches to help them understand difficult concepts. I love coming up with new examples or intuitive ways of thinking through math problems. I think everybody can learn math, and I love helping students of all ages and backgrounds achieve their mathematical goals!
