I am a veteran college chemistry professor with a Ph.D. from Yale who has taught Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry I many times. I have also taught Introductory Chemistry to students who had never had chemistry before and also a General, Organic, and Biochemistry course for health professions. I look at chemistry as a set of skills to be learned, similar to learning a sport or a musical instrument. I can show you what to do, but to really learn you need to do things yourself.

I completed my bachelors in Mathematics honors from Delhi University, India and then masters from IIT Bombay, India. Both of the institutes are top institutes of India and their course structure and referred book helped in building strong basics and developing the interest even deeper. After completing masters I joined Tata Consultancy services as senior data analyst but in starting few months only I realized I want to pursue PhD. So I joined University of Memphis in spring 2017.

I am a graduate of the University of Memphis. I graduated magna cum laude in English with a concentration in Literature. While being a student I was part of the Honors Mentor-ship Program where I helped incoming honors freshmen get acclimated to college life. I held weekly meetings with them and helped them from homework assignments to where they could find good food in or around campus. I will be pursuing a masters degree in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in the summer and hopefully one day become employed as a high school English teacher. I tutor in high school and college level English literature, writing, and grammar. Since my concentration was in literature my favorite area to tutor would be in any literature related assignment. Whether it be for reading comprehension, critical reading, or for research purposes. I believe education is very important and should not be taken for granted. The choices you make in a 4-8 year period greatly influence the rest of your life and getting a strong and well-rounded education helps set-up for future success. My spare time is generally filled with video games and reading (casual or academic) and always striving to learn new things.

I am a rising sophomore at Emory University working towards a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology, as well as a minor in global health, culture, and society. I tutored in multiple subject areas in high school as a peer tutor as well as a tutor to younger students in elementary and middle school. I also tutored elementary school students in multiple subject areas during my first year at Emory. I tutor in many subjects, but have always been passionate specifically about tutoring in math. I have been tutored by peers many times throughout high school and college in different subjects, including the ACT. I found unique ways to solve problems and expand my problem solving skills through this, especially because I felt as though my peers were better able to relate to me, and therefore cater to my needs as a student. My approach is catered specifically to each student by first learning how he or she best learns, and then using tactics that will benefit them the most as they learn and grow as a student.

I am a lifelong learner and love helping others enjoy learning. Languages are my passion and I help students succeed by putting lessons in a real-world context. Whenever possible, I use film clips, journal articles, songs and literature, so that my students begin to think in the new language and not simply memorize words in a textbook! I graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Bachelors in International Studies and a minor in French, and I have spent time living in both France and French-speaking Swtizerland. I have over five years of teaching and tutoring experience and have worked with students of all ages, from elementary to adult. I also have extensive experience teaching English to speakers of other languages and enjoy making my own language accessible to those wanting to learn it. I am a patient and enthusiastic instructor and I look forward to sharing my love of French and English.

I'm originally from Chile and Spanish was my first language. I moved to the US when I was four years old, but never lost sight of my Spanish. Fortunately, I spoke Spanish every day of my life at home and that continued throughout college when I studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain for a semester. Today, I work as a bilingual writer for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I enjoy my sharing my native language with others and encouraging a deeper understanding of Latin American culture. I tutored students throughout college and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I look forward to hearing from you!

I'm a high school chemistry and biology teacher with a love of languages. I consider myself a lifelong learner and am excited to share and discover new subjects and ideas. I'd love to help you in your learning journey as well! I started tutoring as a college freshman after taking an advanced chemistry course and realizing how much I enjoyed working with my classmates to help them study and solve difficult problems. My college hired me to tutor French, biology, and chemistry students throughout the next three and a half years. I also started meeting with several gifted high school students who needed guidance in preparing the best college applications possible. Having successfully passed seven AP tests as a student, I was able to help them prepare for the most challenging content in the classes and on the AP tests. I was also able to share ACT test strategies and content knowledge from my own experience that helped me achieve a 35 cumulative score and qualify as a national merit scholar on the PSAT. During college, I also had the opportunity to volunteer my time with high school students who were internationally adopted or in foster care while awaiting immigration proceedings. Working with students who were learning math, science, and other subjects in their second language became a passion that drove me to switch career paths and become a teacher in a public school. I speak conversational French and Spanish which has given me such an appreciation for the patience and grace of native speakers willing to help me. This has framed my entire approach to education as science often feels like a foreign language to students who are not yet fluent. With patience, exposure, and practice, I believe every student can be successful at even the most challenging science concepts. Now I teach high school chemistry and AP chemistry, but I'm also certified in and have taught high school biology and physical science. My favorite part of teaching chemistry is the moment of satisfaction students experience when they have struggled and overcome a difficult task. My students may have different journeys to success, but I love celebrating every victory.

As a Computer Science student in the process of pursuing a PhD, I know how important it is to understand the ins-and-outs of your classes. Not only will you be better off understanding the deeper meanings, but you might also find your passion with learning. If that is not the case, it's all good, I enjoy practical applications but I also enjoy the theory behind things. If you are having trouble understanding specific subjects or yo u just want some clarification I am happy to help.

I am a recent graduate of Tulane University. I received a B.A. in English (with a concentration in creative writing) as well as a B.A. in political science. I have extensive experience working as a tutor for a wide range of ages. I currently tutor international students ages 4-16 in English. For two years, I taught elementary school students who struggled with literacy in developing their reading abilities. I have participated in countless writing workshops and aided my peers in editing/proofreading sessions throughout my academic career. I understand how difficult English can be for students and that's why I bring both positivity and patience to my lessons. My goal is to help those I tutor grow as readers and writers!

I am a graduate of The University of Memphis. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in literature and World Languages with a concentration in French. I graduated summa cum laude with university honors as the student marshal for The College of Arts and Sciences. I am also a member of the national honor society, Phi Kappa Phi. I am now working towards my Master of Arts in English Literature and a graduate certificate in Women's and Gender Studies with plans to complete a graduate certificate in Autism Studies as well. I believe everyone deserves access to a meaningful education and I know that not everyone thrives with the same teaching methods or paces. This is why it is so important for educators to understand their students and work with them accordingly. I enjoy reading as a pastime and one of the reasons I advocate for reading all throughout life is that it cultivates empathy, a character trait that is absolutely invaluable in this world. I would love to help you with homework!

Frequently Asked Questions

Varsity Tutors connects students across Memphis's 250 schools with expert tutors who understand Tennessee's academic standards and local curriculum expectations. Whether your student attends a school in Shelby County or needs support with specific Tennessee state benchmarks, we match them with tutors who can provide personalized instruction tailored to their needs.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 18.2:1 in Memphis schools, many students benefit from additional one-on-one support to keep pace with their class. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction fills that gap by allowing tutors to focus entirely on your student's learning style, pace, and specific challenges—something that's difficult in larger classroom settings. This targeted approach helps students build confidence and close knowledge gaps before they widen.

Memphis students frequently seek support in math, reading, and test preparation—especially as they progress through Tennessee's grade-level standards and prepare for state assessments. We also work with students on foundational skills, writing, science, and subject-specific challenges that emerge at different grade levels. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who specialize in the exact areas where your student needs the most help.

During the first session, the tutor will assess your student's current level, understand their academic goals, and identify specific areas where they need support. This might involve reviewing recent classwork, discussing challenges with specific concepts, or understanding how they learn best. From there, the tutor develops a personalized plan that aligns with your student's school curriculum and learning pace.

Tutors who work with Memphis students are familiar with Tennessee's academic standards and how they're applied in Shelby County schools. Whether your student is working toward grade-level proficiency, preparing for state assessments, or moving ahead, personalized instruction ensures they're building the specific skills and knowledge Tennessee expects at each grade level. This alignment helps students succeed in their actual classroom while building deeper understanding.

Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions you choose. We offer flexible options to fit different budgets and schedules. To get a personalized quote based on your student's specific needs, connect with our team—they'll help you understand pricing and find a tutoring plan that works for your family.

Varsity Tutors takes time to understand your student's learning style, academic needs, and personality to connect them with a tutor who's a great fit. We consider factors like subject expertise, teaching approach, and availability to ensure the match supports your student's success. If the fit isn't quite right, we can work with you to find a better match.

Many students show noticeable improvement in confidence and understanding within the first few weeks of personalized instruction. However, the timeline depends on your student's starting point, the subject, and how consistently they work with their tutor. Regular communication with the tutor helps you track progress and adjust the plan as needed to keep your student moving forward.
