I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.

A history degree and a 32 ACT give Josh a strong handle on the analytical reading and essay-writing skills that run through IB's humanities track — particularly the document-based reasoning in History HL and the argumentative structure TOK essays demand. He also teaches IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, so students balancing HL coursework across disciplines can work with one tutor who understands how the program's pieces fit together. Rated 5.0 by students.
I am a graduate of the University of Chicago where I received my undergraduate degree in political science. Right after graduation, I worked as an academic and test prep tutor as well as admissions consultant in Hong Kong. For the past two years, I worked with a number of students to help prepare them for college in the United States.
Peter's Masters in English Education and journalism background make him a strong fit for the writing-heavy components that run through every IB course — particularly the Extended Essay and TOK essay, where clear argumentation and formal academic register separate a 5 from a 7. He teaches students how to decode IB rubrics and translate examiner language into concrete revision steps. Rated 4.7 by students.
I'm a recent graduate of the California Institute of Technology in Economics and Computer Science. I was also accepted at Harvard, Princeton, MIT, and Stanford. I have a broad range of interests spanning science, math, engineering, social science, the humanities, the arts, and athletics (I also played on the Caltech basketball team). My background allows me to tutor general college prep, especially the SAT, ACT and the GRE. I love to teach analytical thinking, ranging from advanced Math and Physics to strategies for understanding literature and developing arguments.
I'm a rising junior at Brown University studying biomedical engineering. I have lots of experience in middle school through college level instruction in STEM and SAT/ACT prep. My goal is to provide a fun and productive learning environment by only teaching subjects that I am passionate about.
Navigating the IB diploma means juggling internal assessments, extended essays, and exam prep across subjects that each have their own marking schemes. Austin tutors across IB Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and History, which means he can spot connections between a student's coursework and coordinate study strategies that work across the programme. That cross-subject fluency makes a real difference during crunch periods like mock exams and final revision.
I am a life-long proponent of education and learning. I graduated from Princeton University with a B.A. in philosophy. After working for a few years, including in book publishing, I returned to school and completed my M.A. in history at the University of California, Berkeley. While there, I taught history and philosophy classes to undergraduates. I also taught Standardized Test Prep (SAT and GRE) for Summit Tutors and Kaplan.
I am an incoming student at Yale University studying computer science and economics. I'm also interested in math and chemistry. My favorite area to tutor is SAT, specifically the SAT math section. Whether it's immediate assistance with an exam or long-term goals and improvement, I'm here to help!
I am a student at Duke University studying English, Entrepreneurship, and Photography. I have several years of experience tutoring privately and volunteering as an assistant teacher for elementary school children aged 4-10 years old. I am available to tutor English at all pre-collegiate levels. This may include anything from learning letters to improving in-depth writing and analysis skills. I am also available to tutor Mathematics at an elementary school level. Outside of school, I spend my time reading, running my photography business, hanging out with my dog, and babysitting.
Having earned the full IB diploma at Largo High School, Gabriel knows firsthand how to juggle the demands of HL and SL courses, CAS hours, the Extended Essay, and TOK — all without burning out. He breaks down the IB's assessment criteria so students understand exactly what examiners want, whether they're structuring an Internal Assessment or refining their Extended Essay argument. Rated 4.8 by students, he now applies that same structured thinking to his double major in Computer Science and Biotechnology at UCF.
Having graduated from an IB program herself, Cheryl knows firsthand what it takes to juggle extended essays, internal assessments, and the particular rigor of IB exams. She breaks down the program's expectations — especially around critical thinking and structured argumentation — so students can manage the workload without burning out.
Few tutors have lived the full IB experience the way Maria has — she entered the programme in middle school, completed higher-level courses through graduation, and earned the IB diploma. That means she understands not just individual subjects but the programme's unique demands: Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay, TOK connections, and the time-management balancing act that comes with carrying a full IB course load.
I am a dedicated, highly motivated individual with a passion for enhancing the learning experiences of others. I have taught as a classroom teacher and as a volunteer at state and national parks for the past few years. I focus particularly on highlighting connections between various subject matter to individuals' everyday lives. After I graduated with my Masters degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2014, I moved to New Mexico to pursue a career in environmental conservation. I currently work as a supervisor for an AmeriCorps program that provides opportunities for young adults to gain skills working in the field of conservation while also receiving training for personal and professional development. I aspire to become a ranger with the National Park Service and a freelance writer.
Dalton earned his own IB diploma and knows firsthand how demanding the program is — from managing the Extended Essay and TOK deadlines to balancing HL and SL coursework simultaneously. He breaks down the IB's unique assessment criteria so students understand exactly what examiners want in each subject. Rated 4.9 by students, he covers everything from internal assessments to CAS portfolio strategy.
Rithi teaches both IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and IB Biology, giving her a cross-disciplinary grip on the IB curriculum that's hard to find in a single tutor. She knows how to navigate the internal assessment process — from refining research questions to structuring data analysis — because she's walked students through it across multiple IB science and math courses.
The IB Extended Essay is where most students first encounter real academic research writing — choosing a question, sustaining an argument across 4,000 words, and citing sources properly. Sydney has coached students through that exact process, drawing on her own multi-disciplinary coursework in psychology, Spanish, and religion to advise on topic development and thesis structure.
I am excited about the opportunity to apply my skills and experience for Varsity Tutors. In addition to my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, I also have six years of experience teaching Spanish to middle school students.
IB's emphasis on interdisciplinary thinking and extended writing plays to Emily's strengths — she holds degrees in both political science and fine arts, and she teaches across IB Math, Extended Essay, and language courses. Whether a student needs to structure a Theory of Knowledge essay, tackle probability in IB Math SL, or polish an Extended Essay draft, she connects each task back to the analytical and communication skills IB examiners actually reward.
Abby tutors across the full IB curriculum — Mathematics HL, Physics SL, Biology HL, and Language A: Literature — which means she can tackle both the subject content and the program-specific demands like internal assessments and exam formatting. Her chemical engineering background at Barrett Honors College gives her particular depth in the math and science tracks, where she breaks down IB-style extended-response questions into manageable steps. Rated 5.0 by students.
Alexander's liberal arts education — spanning computer science, theatre, linguistics, and sociology — mirrors the kind of cross-disciplinary thinking the IB program actually tests, especially in Theory of Knowledge essays where students must draw connections across ways of knowing. He teaches the writing and oral presentation components with particular confidence, bringing both his theatre training to IOCs and his 1550 SAT verbal chops to Extended Essay drafting and revision. Rated 5.0 by students.
IB's emphasis on critical thinking and interdisciplinary connections plays to Alexandra's strengths as a dual-major in Spanish and Creative Writing who has mentored incoming college freshmen. She's especially effective with the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge components, where crafting a clear, well-supported argument matters more than memorizing content.
A biology major currently in medical school, Hassan brings real depth to IB's science track — particularly Biology HL and the science Internal Assessments, where designing a solid experiment and writing up results to meet IB rubric standards trips up even strong students. His 35 ACT and 5.0 student rating speak to his ability to break down complex material clearly, and his broad tutoring range across math, writing, and MCAT prep means he can also support the interdisciplinary demands of the Extended Essay and TOK.
As a former IB student, Nagasai knows the program from the inside — the extended essay drafts, the TOK presentations, the internal assessments that each demand a different kind of thinking. She breaks down IB-specific expectations like criterion-based grading and the reflective writing the program requires, so students aren't guessing at what examiners actually want.
I am an aspiring applied mathematician, with particular interest in image processing and climate science. I graduated in May 2017 from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor's in physics and mathematics, and am beginning a PhD program in September 2017 at the University of Chicago in Computational and Applied Mathematics. I've tutored introductory physics students for three years and enjoyed it thoroughly, as a chance to help other students while revisiting fundamental concepts to enhance my own knowledge. I'm eager to continue reaching out and helping students of math and physics to succeed and, furthermore, to appreciate the beauty and power of these subjects.
I am currently a senior at Harvard College where I study chemistry, and I'll be attending Columbia Medical School next year. I have years of experience tutoring college students in math (mostly calculus) and chemistry including both general and organic chemistry. In addition, I am very familiar with all sections of the SAT and ACT having prepared several high school students for these tests. I believe that every student is capable of boosting his or her baseline score on these tests, so long as he or she works hard to get to know the format of the tests and the most popular types of questions. I tutor because I love seeing students develop a genuine passion for the subjects they once disliked (such as math and science), once they understand the power of these subjects and their applications to the real world.
I am an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. I have been tutoring for over 6 years now, and I have found it to be an extremely rewarding and enjoyable experience. I specialize in mathematics, particularly at the high school level, and I also have experience tutoring other subjects. I also have done SAT prep for the mathematics section of the New SAT and am very familiar with the recent changes to the exam. My belief is that everyone is capable of learning with enough time, explanation, and practice, and I hope to pass this on to all the students I work with. For this reason, I believe in teaching students how to think and problem solve, rather than just having them memorize patterns or facts.
I am a strong believer that anyone can learn anything! I attended the University of Pennsylvania as an undergraduate and recently finished my Master's in Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As a tutor, I create a space where my learners can feel empowered and safe to take on the sometimes difficult, yet often fulfilling and fun, challenge of learning new things. I practice a growth mindset philosophy, and I often say that it is okay to be wrong, it just means you haven't learned the material... yet. With patience and effective pedagogy, I strive to give my students confidence that they can learn anything they set their mind to. I take my students' desires, motivations, goals, and interests seriously. Fun fact: I am an international student from Malaysia!

I think that data science and research is important for our future, so I am motivated to help students learn and appreciate math and science as important tools.
I am primarily an SAT and writing tutor with two years of experience and over 60 former students. I have spent hundreds of hours familiarizing myself with dozens of real SAT tests and SAT format-specific strategies. While a tutor, and later general manager, at a boutique university admissions consulting company in Cairo Egypt, I applied my teaching experience to a leading role developing SAT curricula for a variety of skill levels.
I am currently a student at Stanford University studying math and political science. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and experience with younger students. I have helped students of different ages and from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and so I am very conscious of the needs and prior knowledge my students and tailor my tutoring method and style individually.
I am a current undergraduate student at Duke University seeking a major in neuroscience and a possible minor in literature or chemistry. I have been tutoring higher level courses since the beginning of high school, and although I tutor in a variety of subjects, I specialize in writing, English, and essay editing (especially IB Extended Essays or college essays). I also help students with standardized testing, particularly in the SAT Reading portion of the exam. My passion for tutoring comes from my love of learning and helping others learn, and in my free time I enjoy painting, poetry, and fashion design.
I am a recent Cornell University graduate (Dec '23) majoring in Biological Sciences with a focus on Genetics, Genomics, and Development. My passion lies in healthcare, as I am currently preparing to attend medical school this upcoming fall. However, I have always had an interest in teaching. I started as a general chemistry TA, supporting students during problem solving sessions. Then, I helped teach our genetics lecture course, coordinating individual and group tutoring sessions that guided students in content application. This position transformed into a leadership role, organizing our teaching team while spearheading an initiative to train fellow teaching assistants in pedagogical techniques that I learned in a course I took on the art of teaching. Lastly, in an ethics of medicine course of non-STEM majors, I prepared and facilitated discussion sections on current topics in personalized medicine. These experiences, combined with my time as a teaching assistant in correctional facilities, helped me grow as a varsity tutor now going into my 4th year on this platform. Given this breadth of experience teaching diverse and unique students, I am eager and excited to support young scientists in any subject related to this field.
I'm starting my junior year at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. I'm currently getting my degree in biology with a concentration in health and human disease, global health, and a minor in French. I love reading, traveling, learning and helping others learn! I have experience tutoring high school and elementary school students in math, science, and English and I love tutoring in each subject equally. Eventually, I see myself going to medical school and researching topics related to viral diseases which I've been interested in since a very young age. I'm very passionate about the subjects I teach and hope to pass my passion on to the individuals I tutor!
I am a graduate of Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American History. I recently received my Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and began my career as an attorney. I am passionate about continuing my work in education through tutoring. I enjoy tutoring many subjects, particularly History, SAT Reading and Writing, College Essays, and Spanish. I love assisting students in implementing simple but effective changes in their preparation for Standardized Tests that show immediate results. I find this motivates students to continue through struggles in their educational pursuits. When I am not working, I enjoy yoga, running, cooking, traveling and playing the cello.
I'm a coterminal master's student at Stanford University in California majoring in Computer Science (Biocomputation). Throughout high school and college, I've taken many courses in computer science, the life sciences (biology and chemistry), and math; and I've been through a lot of standardized tests. For computer science in particular, I have a lot of experience writing software in Python and C++ for AI and systems classes, and I'll be interning as a software engineer at Facebook this summer. I got a lot of great tips and mentorship from tutors along the way, and would love to pass along what I know!
I am excited at the prospect of working with you as a tutor. My previous tutoring experience includes personal tutoring and tutoring through the Midtown Educational Foundation in Chicago.

Frequently Asked Questions
IAs require students to design independent investigations, conduct research, and analyze results with academic rigor—skills that go far beyond traditional test-taking. Many students struggle with research methodology, data interpretation, and meeting IB's strict formatting and citation standards. A tutor can guide you through the entire IA process: refining your research question, designing a valid methodology, analyzing data critically, and ensuring your work meets IB criteria without doing the work for you. This personalized support is especially valuable because IA quality directly impacts your final grade.
The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research project that demands sustained inquiry, sophisticated argumentation, and proper academic writing—challenges many students face for the first time. Tutors experienced with IB can help you select a focused research question, develop a coherent argument structure, integrate evidence effectively, and maintain academic integrity throughout. They can also provide feedback on drafts to ensure your work demonstrates the critical thinking and depth of analysis that IB examiners expect, ultimately helping you achieve a stronger grade on this significant component.
The ToK essay requires you to explore abstract epistemological questions and connect them to real-world examples—a fundamentally different skill from subject-specific knowledge. Students often struggle with philosophical depth, avoiding vague generalizations, and demonstrating genuine engagement with knowledge questions rather than just listing examples. An effective ToK tutor understands how to help you develop nuanced arguments about knowledge claims, guides you toward sophisticated examples that genuinely illustrate your ideas, and teaches you to question assumptions critically. This subject demands tutors who are comfortable with philosophical thinking and can model how to construct intellectually rigorous arguments.
Mathematics HL and Physics HL consistently challenge students due to their conceptual density and problem-solving demands, while Chemistry HL requires mastery of both theoretical understanding and practical application. In humanities, History HL students struggle with source evaluation and constructing nuanced historical arguments, while English Literature students often need help analyzing texts with the sophistication IB demands. Language B students frequently underestimate the fluency and cultural awareness required. The subjects where tutoring proves most valuable are those requiring both deep conceptual understanding and the ability to apply knowledge in unfamiliar contexts—exactly what IB assesses.
The best IB tutors have direct experience with the IB curriculum—ideally having taught IB courses or completed the program themselves—and understand how IB assessment differs from traditional curricula. They should be familiar with IB's emphasis on independent thinking, interdisciplinary connections, and the specific demands of IAs, EEs, and ToK. Look for tutors who can explain not just content but the reasoning behind IB's pedagogical approach, who understand grade boundaries and what examiners are looking for, and who can adapt their teaching to your specific subject and learning style. Experience with your particular subject at HL or SL level is valuable, as is familiarity with past exam papers and mark schemes.
IB students juggle simultaneous demands—regular coursework, IAs at different stages, the Extended Essay, ToK essays, and exam preparation—that can feel overwhelming without a strategic approach. Tutors can help you create realistic timelines for long-term projects, identify which subjects need the most attention based on your goals and strengths, and develop efficient study strategies that prevent last-minute cramming. They can also help you understand how to balance depth of understanding with breadth across six subjects, and how to prioritize when everything feels urgent. This kind of personalized planning is difficult to achieve alone and significantly reduces stress while improving outcomes.
IB exams test not just content knowledge but your ability to apply concepts to unfamiliar scenarios, synthesize ideas across topics, and demonstrate critical thinking—requiring a fundamentally different preparation approach than memorization-based tests. Effective IB exam preparation involves practicing with past papers under timed conditions, analyzing mark schemes to understand what examiners reward, and developing strategies for tackling multi-part questions that build in complexity. Tutors can help you identify patterns in what IB exams consistently test, teach you how to structure responses that earn top marks, and provide targeted practice on your weaker areas. This strategic, evidence-based approach typically yields stronger results than generic test prep.
IB emphasizes interconnected learning across six subject groups plus ToK and CAS, requiring you to see relationships between disciplines rather than studying subjects in isolation. The curriculum spirals—revisiting concepts at deeper levels—which means foundational gaps can compound as you progress. Many students underestimate how IB's breadth requirement affects their study strategy; you can't simply focus on your strongest subjects. Tutors familiar with IB understand this structure and can help you build strong conceptual foundations early, make connections across subjects, and develop the holistic thinking IB cultivates. They can also help you navigate the unique challenge of maintaining quality across six subjects simultaneously while managing independent projects.
