I am a Seattle area math tutor in various subjects, including algebra, trigonometry, calculus and SAT Math test preparation. I graduated with a math degree from Stanford University, and am currently pursuing a PhD in history at the University of Washington. While new to Varsity Tutors, I have years of experience as a private tutor, as well as classroom teaching experience as a Teaching Assistant. For me, tutoring is very student-directed. My teaching style emphasizes flexibility and exploring the kind of learning most suitable to each student. My teaching style also emphasizes understanding how to use and apply formulas and mathematical properties in order to ease the process of memorization.

I am a Masters student in Physics at the University of Washington and have over 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience. Most recently, I worked as a teacher at the Yellow Wood Academy, a private high school that offers students a specialized one-on-one classroom environment. At YWA, I taught all high school science classes (including AP, Computer Programming, and Environmental Science) and all levels of high school math. I am an undergraduate earning my Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington. I have already earned my Associate's of Arts with honors through the running start program, and graduated high school as a Valedictorian. I have worked with Disability Resource Services in taking notes for students, and have also offered assistance with homework to other students. As an engineering student, I am able to use my experience to offer assistance with math. I am also able to tutor in chemistry since I have already completed the general chemistry series. I believe that education is extremely important in life, not only for the purpose of knowledge, but also for the determination and ambition that learning teaches us. Understanding concepts not only takes time, but also dedication. As a student who has also attended many tutoring hours, I have come to understand that concepts sometimes require different approaches to finally have that idea click.

I am currently a 3rd year student at the University of Florida studying Computer Science, working toward an eventual master's degree. I have worked with students in a larger group setting through my volunteer work in my local community center's Youth Tutoring Program and one-on-one, tutoring a child with learning disabilities over zoom over the pandemic. I like to focus on providing a thorough explanation and making sure a student understands a question conceptually, rather than just how to do it, while also going over important test-taking strategies. I tutor both SAT Math and Reading/Writing. I believe that learning how to deal with high-pressure testing like the SAT helps students prepare for the kinds of difficult testing environments they will encounter more regularly during college.

I am a native Seattleite, who graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and Elementary Education (K-8). I later received my master's degree in social work from the University of Washington. I taught grades 1-3 in Boston, Massachusetts (private school) and in Monroe, Washington (public school). I am passionate about helping children navigate through life both educationally and emotionally and found great satisfaction in working in Social Services for 11 years in a non-profit that provided mentors for children from single parent homes. While I was raising my children, I began tutoring Reading part time in public schools and found that I absolutely love working with emerging readers in small groups or one to one. It is extremely satisfying helping a child become a strong reader, as it influences their success in every subject area. I try to instill a love for books in my students, while using humor and positive encouragement. I strongly believe that children need support at home, both by being read to and reading to their family members. Following this period of learning loss due to the Covid epidemic, I am enjoying working with students to provide phonics-based early reading education.

I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in Politics and a minor in Asian American Studies from Pomona College. I was also accepted to Tufts University and the University of Southern California, where I was awarded a merit scholarship, and waitlisted at Harvard University. I have tutored underrepresented elementary school students to improve their reading comprehension and edited college applications for high school students. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, and Reading. Hi, I'm Laura! I graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor's of science degree in mathematics and a minor in sociology. There, I earned the Frances B. Huston award, the most prestigious award given to graduating students, for excellence in academics, leadership, and community service. From there, I became a student at the University of Washington (UW), earning my Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and a position as a PhD student in the department. I was also awarded the Carl S. Pearson award for academic excellence in the Master's program. I have been working as a PhD student since then, with expertise in all types of math including algebra, calculus, linear algebra, and numerical analysis, among others. I also have years of experience coding in both python and matlab! I spent three years as an undergraduate teaching assistant, helping teach both high school and college level math classes. I also taught multiple sections of calculus at the University of Washington as a Master's student, and I have served as a teaching assistant throughout my time at UW. My favorite thing about these positions were the opportunities to work one-on-one with students, developing new approaches to help them understand difficult concepts. I love coming up with new examples or intuitive ways of thinking through math problems. I think everybody can learn math, and I love helping students of all ages and backgrounds achieve their mathematical goals! I've been working with programming languages for about 20 years, and have 9 years of industry experience developing software, and a Master's degree in Computational Linguistics from the University of Washington. I earned a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a MA.Ed. in Urban Environmental Education from Antioch University Seattle in partnership with IslandWood. I have a MFA in Creative Writing degree from the University of Washington Seattle, where I am currently a fifth-year Ph.D. Candidate in English literature and culture. As an educator, my driving question is "How can I more effectively teach across diverse learning styles?" I use multiple tactics to accomplish a responsive approach in the classroom. I use a mix of visuals, questions, and educational tools when deliver teaching lessons. Built into my teaching are various ways to evaluate learning through formative and summative evaluation. Usually throughout the course, I do check-ins with my students to individually ask them to self-evaluate while also offering areas for which to improve. This allows me to reiterate course goals and objectives while giving them the opportunity and extra push to align themselves with these goals, making appropriate adjustments when needed. This check-in also allows me to ask what learning style is working for the students. As an educator, I use my environmental education, professional environmental work and community college teaching experience to incorporate strategies that increase equity in the classroom. I bring all of my teaching experience to my tutoring.

I developed a strong interest in mathematics after high school, when Algebra 1 showed me the value of learning concepts step by step. I graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Music Education, a minor in Music, and a K-12 Teaching Certificate, while also completing college-level coursework in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. Later, I returned to school for mathematics certification and went on to teach math from 4th through 12th grade during a twenty-three-year career in public education. I hold a current Washington Teaching Certificate in K-12 Choral Music and 4-12 Mathematics. For the past six years, I have focused exclusively on online math instruction, helping students with coursework, test preparation, and confidence-building through clear, logical explanations.

I am an LSAT tutor. My approach combines step-by-step explanation with coaching on study planning, error analysis, and confidence under timed conditions. I enjoy helping students replace guesswork with understanding so they feel in control of the test and can see steady, meaningful progress. The test will become much less stressful and confusing!
