If your student is in the midst of SSAT prep, Varsity Tutors can help get them set up with a Buffalo SSAT Course that offers a more intricate review than they might be able to get on their own. The Secondary School Admission Test, or SSAT, is a standardized test used by admissions offices to assess the abilities of students interested in enrolling in an independent school or private school. Because of this, it is important for your student to be prepared. If your student is planning on completing the SSAT, they may be wondering where to begin preparing.
A Buffalo SSAT course could be the perfect solution for those looking for outside help as they begin or continue their studies for the SSAT. If you choose to pursue outside help with the assistance of Varsity Tutors, your student will take collaborative online classes led by an expert instructor. The SSAT is a big hurdle to clear on the path to secondary schools, and prep courses provide awareness of the content and layout of the tests, making them a great option for those interested in preparing to perform at the best of their abilities.
What can a Buffalo SSAT course help me review?
The SSAT seeks to measure the basic verbal, math, and reading skills students require for successful performance in private and independent schools. The test gives an equitable means to assess and compare applicants and your student will complete one of three separate levels of the test depending on his or her age. These levels are Elementary, Middle, and Upper. Let's have a more in-depth look at each individual level of the SSAT.
The Upper Level of the SSAT is intended for students between eighth and 11th grade seeking admission to an independent high school the following year. This test includes a Writing Sample, in which your student will be provided with two prompts and must select one on which to base their work. This portion of the SSAT, as well as the Experimental portion, will be unscored for all levels. Next, test-takers will complete a Quantitative section that consists of two parts of 25 questions each and covers topics including arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. After this is the 40 question Reading portion, in which students have 40 minutes to interpret meaning and extract information from narrative and argumentative passages. Finally, your student will take the Verbal part of the SSAT, which consists of 60 questions involving synonyms and analogies.
The Middle Level of the SSAT is intended for students finishing fifth, sixth, or seventh grade and looking to attend an independent middle school the next school year. This level also includes a Writing Sample section, in which students have 25 minutes to complete one prompt. Next, your student will take the Quantitative portion, which covers topics ranging from algebra, data analysis, probability, and numbers and operations. The Reading section follows and features 40 passage-based questions that must be completed in 40 minutes. This part of the test covers the subject of English and assesses the student's ability to interpret meaning from narrative and argumentative passages. Finally, we have the Verbal section, in which the student should be prepared to answer questions about concepts including synonyms and analogies, word roots, prefixes and suffixes, and more.
The Elementary Level of the SSAT is designed for third-grade students applying to an independent school for fourth grade, or for fourth-grade students applying to an independent school for fifth grade. In this level, your child will complete the Quantitative, Verbal, Reading, and Writing Sample sections mentioned above, but they will be tailored to correspond with their age range and education level. Including the Writing Sample, this level of the SSAT involves a total of 89 questions, and each student has a total of one hour and 45 minutes to complete them all. It is important to note that on this level of the test, there is no penalty for incorrect answers, so guessing is acceptable.
Each level of the SSAT is designed to assess key areas of education to determine whether your student matches the educational requirement for whatever secondary school he or she may be applying to. It is important to note that throughout the Quantitative portion at any level, the use of a calculator is not allowed. For each level, the Writing Sample will also be sent to the schools that the student applies to. Lastly, while guessing is encouraged on the Elementary Level, it is critical to remember that students taking the Upper and Middle Level SSAT will receive a point for each correct answer and lose one-quarter of a point for an incorrect answer. However, there is no penalty for unanswered questions.

Hello! I am recent grad from UW-Madison in Mathematics. I love teaching math because I am a firm believer that everyone is capable of understanding math and helping students realize that within themselves is incredibly gratifying. I particularly like teaching calculus because that's where math starts to get fun, students begin developing a type of thinking that I affectionately refer to as mathematical freestyling.

...believe that curiosity can lead to so much joy. I enjoy learning as much as I do teaching. One thing I have learned is that every child learns differently. While there are larger techniques that can be used in larger settings, each child responds differently to what they're learning in their surroundings, and who they are learning with. Part of my love for teaching is figuring that out with each student.

My mission is to inspire life long learning as well as to give you the tools to discover your capacity for academic success and happiness. ... To help a student get engaged again in a subject they're probably loathing, I would ask them questions about what they like. Life is vastly interconnected; therefore, I would draw the line between the student's personal interests and the material at hand. If they can be wowed about how the world works, then it inspires one to dive in head first to the content.
