Let Varsity Tutors help your student take their Charlotte SSAT prep to the next level. The SSAT is a standardized assessment designed for students in 3rd to 11th grade who are seeking entry to a private or independent elementary, middle, or high school. Otherwise known as the Secondary School Admission Test, the SSAT is a comprehensive exam that focuses on the skills your student needs to thrive in the programs offered at these types of schools. Thorough test prep is critical to your student's performance on this exam.
We can enroll your student in a Charlotte SSAT prep class or help you find a private tutor who can help your student get ready for the test. Our educational consultants can help guide you toward the ideal option for your student's needs.
What can Charlotte SSAT prep cover?
The SSAT is a comprehensive assessment of the key skills your student should have in order to meet the expectations of a private or independent elementary, middle, or high school. There are three levels of this exam. The Experimental section for this exam is unscored. It is merely used to test potential questions for the future. Let's explore the differences between each level of the SSAT.
The Elementary Level SSAT is administered to third and fourth-grade students. It consists of the following sections: Quantitative/Math, Verbal, Reading, Writing Sample, and Experimental. In all, there are 89 questions your student must solve within an hour and 50 minutes. The Quantitative section has 30 questions with 30 minutes on the clock. It covers concepts such as addition, place value, measurements, division, and graph interpretation. The Verbal section focuses on your student's understanding of language and age-appropriate words. There are seven passages with a set of four questions on the Reading section of this test. Your student will need to read these carefully and identify parts of the passage such as the main idea, know the definition of certain words in context, and other information. Finally, the Writing sample tasks your student with writing a story based on a picture in 15 minutes. This allows your student to demonstrate their communication skills to potential schools.
The Middle and Upper Levels of the SSAT share a similar format with one another. These tests allow your student two hours and 50 minutes to complete six sections: the Writing Sample, Quantitative 1 and 2, Reading, Verbal, and Experimental. However, the content each one covers is different.
Let's explore the Middle Level SSAT first. This test is presented to students from 6th to 8th grade. The Writing prompt is timed at 25 minutes long. The test presents two creative prompts for your student, and they must pick one to base a story on. The two Quantitative sections are each 30 minutes long with 25 questions apiece. There are a variety of math skills it assesses, such as data analysis, probability, geometric shapes, and other concepts. The Reading section consists of 40 questions with a 40-minute timer. There will be several passages for your student to read. They will need to be able to evaluate arguments and opinions, identify the author's purpose, and otherwise interpret the narrative. Lastly, your student will face the Verbal section. There are 60 questions and your student has 30 minutes to solve them. This portion focuses on synonyms and analogies.
The Upper Level SSAT is a more advanced form of this exam, focusing on skills and concepts that your student has built upon as they progressed through their educational career. It is offered to students in 9th to 11th grade.
Can my student benefit from a different approach to Charlotte SSAT prep?
There are two primary forms of effective and efficient test review: prep classes and private tutoring. While each can offer a variety of unique benefits, different students learn best with different approaches. Each option is led by an expert instructor who has been thoroughly vetted. They are experienced, knowledgeable, and skilled in helping students prepare for the SSAT. Read on to learn more about how prep classes and tutoring can help your student.
We can get your student enrolled in a Charlotte SSAT prep course that is held via a live virtual classroom. New courses in multiple sections start on a weekly basis, so you don't have to worry about missing a deadline to get your student signed up. They can participate in two-week and four-week sessions. Once they are enrolled, your student can join their classmates and instructor online to engage in group discussions and course activities. Courses are similar to traditional learning in that they follow a set curriculum based on the level of the SSAT your student is taking. Your student's instructor can offer insight to the exam, such as strategies that can help them work efficiently through each section. Their mentor can even set aside extra time to work with them through concepts they find particularly challenging.
You can also set up study sessions for your student with a private instructor. One-on-one studying with a Charlotte SSAT tutor can focus entirely on your student's needs. A personal instructor can develop a study plan that is based on your student's learning personality, strengths, testing goals, and the areas of the test in which they have the most room for improvement. Each study session takes an approach that can appeal to your student's preferences. Their instructor can even assess their progress regularly to ensure they are on the right track.

...Success coach with middle schoolers in a local public school. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring math for middle and high school students at all levels. I have a great understanding of the subject, as well as how it progresses and is measured in schools. Having completed a student teaching term, I am familiar with learners of all shapes and sizes and can accomodate my style of teaching to best suit every student!... My teaching philosophy is that the best way for students to learn is for them to work out problems themselves. I prefer to ask provocative questions that lead students to the answer rather than just show them how, or give them the answer. In my experience this is the most effective method of teaching.
