If your student is in elementary, middle, or high school and is interested in attending an independent or private school, it may be beneficial to contact Varsity Tutors and enroll them in a Columbus SSAT class. The SSAT is a test that is utilized by many independent and private schools as a part of their admissions process. The exam is designed to make the admissions process as equitable as possible. The SSAT tests students on their reading, verbal, and math skills. All of these skills are considered important when it comes to predicting success in independent and private schools.
Based on your student's current grade level and the school they would like to attend, they may take any of the three available levels of the SSAT. Students who are currently in 3rd or 4th grade would take the Elementary Level test. Students who are currently in 5th through 7th grade and would like to attend middle school at an independent or private school can sign up to take the Middle Level test. Finally, students who are currently in 8th through 11th grades and wish to go to an independent or private high school can take the Upper Level test.
The three different levels are similar to each other in the sense that they all contain a Quantitative, Verbal, Reading, and Writing section. They are different in the sense that the material is more complex on the Middle and Upper Levels and that the Elementary Level has 89 questions while the Middle and Upper Levels have 167.
What can a Columbus SSAT class help my student review?
As stated, each level of the SSAT contains four sections. A Columbus SSAT class can help your student review the material they need to know for each of these four sections.
Writing Sample
The Writing Sample is not scored for any of the three levels. However, it is still important for your student to do their best on this section because their writing sample is sent to every school they apply to. On the Elementary Level test, this section requires students to look at a picture and write a short story about it. They're expected to have a beginning, middle, and end to their story, and they'll have 15 minutes to finish it. This section is designed to look at their spelling, grammar, punctuation, and organization.
On the Middle and Upper Level test, this section has students choose between two different writing prompts. On the Middle Level test, students can choose between two creative prompts, while the Upper Level test gives them the freedom to choose between a creative prompt and a traditional essay prompt. Both levels give students 25 minutes to finish this section.
Quantitative Section
The Quantitative Section is concerned with math related topics. Students are not permitted to use a calculator for this section on any of the three levels. The Elementary Level test has 30 questions in this section, and students have 30 minutes to finish it. In terms of topics, the Elementary Level focuses on number sense, properties and operations, and measurement, among others. It can also be useful for students to be familiar with basic math skills, such as addition and multiplication.
The Upper and Middle levels give students 60 minutes to finish this section, and they contain 2 sections with 25 questions each. Both levels cover algebra, arithmetic, and geometry. One difference between the two levels is that the Upper Level places more of an emphasis on solving algebraic problems while the Middle Level is more focused on data analysis.
Verbal Section
The Verbal Section is focused on the English language. The Elementary Level focuses more on the relationships between words and understanding the language on its 30 questions. The Upper and Middle Levels are geared towards synonyms and analogies, with 30 questions being dedicated to synonyms and the other 30 being dedicated to analogies.
Reading Section
The Reading Section involves reading through passages. The Elementary Level test has 28 questions, while the Upper and Middle Levels have 40. The Elementary Level requires students to read through passages and identify the main ideas while also being able to identify other pieces of information. The Upper and Middle Levels are similar, but they ask students to read through both narrative and argumentative passages.
How can a Columbus SSAT course help my student prepare?
There are numerous ways in which a Columbus SSAT course can help you prepare. One of the main benefits of enrolling your student in a Columbus SSAT course is that the course takes place entirely online. Students often have very busy schedules. Whether you are driving them to dance, soccer, or orchestra, there are plenty of activities your student might already be involved in. As such, it can be a challenge to find time to add any others.
Attending an online class can be useful in this regard because you won't have to worry about driving your student anywhere. Additionally, new classes start every week, so it's simple to find a class that fits into your child's schedule.
The structure of the class can also be beneficial because it is designed to look and feel like a regular class. As such, it should be a structure that your student is already familiar with. They can work with an instructor who can give them an idea as to what material they should be studying. Additionally, their instructor can help them work on skills like time management, which could be useful in making sure they have enough time to complete every question within a section.
The structure of an SSAT class also allows your student to collaborate with other students. This enables them to engage in group discussions and activities, which can be a nice break from just listening to the instructor.
How can I find a Columbus SSAT prep course for my student?
Enrolling your student in a Columbus SSAT prep course is as simple as contacting Varsity Tutors either online or over the phone. You can enroll your student in either a two-week or four-week course based on their needs.

I first became familiar with the other side of the teacher/student relationship while tutoring a Japanese student taking an English as a Second Language class. While working with her I discovered the trust the student has with the teacher, and how carefully this trust must be preserved. I also learned to keep myself out of the student's work, in other words the student's work was entirely work of the student.

...able to break difficult topics into simple components, and I am able to guide students in making connections. I am especially effective at working with students who feel they are "math challenged." I have been working one-on-one with students for the past ten years, both as a college instructor and as a private tutor. Helping students gain confidence in themselves and their ability to think mathematically is both my passion and my purpose.... My philosophy of teaching can be compared to a cord plugged into an outlet. I view the successful student as a three-pronged plug. Students will have maximum learning gains when they have a connection with: 1) the material, 2) the instructor, and 3) their own learning. My job is to facilitate this connection.
