I worked with the student on all 4 sections on the ACT. We focused on a social studies reading passage, a few biology science passages, an advanced English passage, and Advanced (45-60) level math questions. The student performed well in our session, did not do as well on the homework. He just needs to read more carefully and not overlook certain details.

The student and I covered the ACT Math and Reading sections in today's session. I am extremely impressed by his skills; he is one of the brightest students I have tutored, and I believe he has potential to achieve a very high score. We completed the second half of a math section where I timed him while completing math problems. His timing was on target and he still answered most of the questions correctly. We went over a few equations, as this exam was more equation heavy. We spent the end of the section working on the Reading, where timing is most crucial. He completed the prose passage in approximately 10 minutes (goal time is around 8, though this is flexible), and answered nearly all of the questions correctly. We will complete the reading next session with timing. I am very excited for him and his score potential!

The student had completed an ACT practice test, and we reviewed her answers, primarily on the English section. For the questions she answered correctly, I asked her to explain her reasoning and process of eliminating answers. We then applied this process to the questions she had missed, and I clarified why the correct answer would be the best choice. We focused on mechanics (when to use commas and apostrophes) and syntax. The most challenging questions were ones where more than one answer would seem to make sense grammatically, but only one is the best choice given the context of the passage. We also briefly touched on test-taking strategies, including time management and process of elimination. She was very receptive and seemed to come away with a better understanding of the concepts. In our next session, we plan to focus more heavily on the reading section of the ACT.
