ACT Writing Tutoring review by Ian in Cambridge
This session we continued our focus on the Reading section by looking at another practice Reading section that the student prepared. It seems like she has turned the corner on this section, averaging about 3 problems wrong per passage, which would put her in the 25-28 range for the section. She is much more consistent than she used to be, only missing the most difficult or time consuming questions of each passage. She'll practice one more reading section before the test just to reinforce what we have been working on and work out any kinks. We spent the remainder of the session reviewing math concepts like the interior angle theorem. For our remaining sessions, we will touch base with the English and Reading sections but focus mainly on the Math and Science sections.

We covered circle sector questions and trigonometry concepts in math. The student seemed pretty comfortable with trigonometry. We spent the rest of the time on the English section. She was comfortable with some grammar but struggled in other areas. Next time, we will continue to cover English concepts and review some general math. In the future, we will begin on the science section.

Good, productive session today. We reviewed the student's Reading homework from last session, which showed a marked improvement over his previous test scores. We did about 45 minutes of timed drills with more reading, then transitioned over to the Science section.

Today we worked on more math practice. There is much more practice to come in the upcoming lessons. We are working on optimizing time on problems as well as some content that the student is not familiar with. She is going to take a practice SAT test before next lesson that can be graded so we can gauge which test she naturally performs better on. My hunch is on the SAT as there is a decent amount of content on the math ACT that she has not learned yet. Once we get those results back, we can move forward accordingly. She is becoming much more comfortable with trigonometry and logarithm questions. I want to fit in as many practice tests between now and test day as possible so she can come in confident about where she stands on test day.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Elisa in Cambridge
Today the student and I reviewed probability and counting problems. Despite claiming that probability is her weak spot, she understands the concept well and was able to answer almost all of the practice problems I gave her. We then went on to review geometry - lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles. She understands the concepts but needs to spend a little time before the test memorizing relevant equations. We finished the session by talking about the essay. We reviewed the scoring rubric, then read examples of essays of different levels and talked about what made them successful or unsuccessful. I asked the student to outline essays for two different essay prompts, making sure to include relevant context for each issue as well as counterexamples. She does a very good job of generating examples quickly, but she needs to be careful that her examples are diverse enough. I have asked her to make sure she keeps doing practice problems from her book while she is away next week.

The student scored a 33 composite on her full practice ACT, with a 35 on reading and all of the other multiple-choice sections at or above 31; her essay was in the high 20s as well. After reviewing the homework, we did one last abridged drill, and she kept up her success yet again with a 30 composite. As long as she maintains her approach, she should do very well on Tuesday's test.
