I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Rachael

Certified Tutor

I am a senior at American University studying Environmental Studies and International Studies, with a minor in Literature. Thanks to the nine Advanced Placement classes I took in high school, I'll be graduating with two distinct degrees next May. I have a passion for education and a long-standing background teaching both struggling and advanced students in subjects ranging from English and writing skills to SAT Prep, high school chemistry to advanced history, Spanish to elementary school math. For the past five years, I have mastered a range of educational strategies while tutoring students individually and in large groups, developing curricula and mentoring college applicants. In this time, I have spent thousands of hours working with students, and I feel well-equipped to work with your child.

My tutoring style begins without any assumptions about a student's needs, which I believe is critical to their success. The advantage of tutoring versus a large classroom setting is that I can direct lessons to your child's particular struggles and abilities. I will always begin a tutoring relationship by asking students where they feel they need assistance and together we will develop a plan for success. I am someone who likes to have fun, but not waste the time and resources of the family I am working for. I will keep your student engaged and highly productive while enjoying themselves. I will also leave them with study skills they can apply across all of their subjects. My multidisciplinary background also enables me to answer a quick question outside the subject I am hired to teach.

Outside of school, I am an avid reader, hiker, and love exploring the D.C. area with friends. I am a California native with a love of the outdoors and have come to appreciate the East Coast's many charms in my four years here.
