Greek Tutoring FAQ
Don't be among the many people who say, It's all Greek to me," meaning that something is as foreign and difficult to understand as the Greek language. Instead, learn the ancient tongue of Western culture today with an able tutor who can help guide you towards expertise in this important language. At Varsity Tutors, we can help you connect you with a Greek language tutor who is available for all periods of development of the Greek language. For those looking for help in a classical Greek course, we can help connect you with a tutor who can teach you the works of Plato, Homer, Thucydides, and all of the major writers of all periods of ancient Greek literature. Likewise, if you need to learn Koine in order to read the Christian New Testament or the Greek Septuagint (the Greek Old Testament), a tutor who is well trained in this common use of the Greek tongue can help. They will be able to help you learn this Biblical language. Finally, if you are looking to learn modern Greek, a tutor who is expert will be available to help you learn to read, write, and speak in this language.
No matter what your background, an expert Greek tutor can provide you with the help you need in learning one of these difficult forms of the Greek tongue. Even if you do not know the Greek alphabet, a tutor can help you start from the beginning, quickly getting into active use of the language and learning to communicate efficiently. Likewise, given the significant role of formal grammatical concepts in this language, a tutor can help you fill in any lacunae that might be causing you issues with learning the various types of declensions and conjugations - often rarely heeded in the simplified grammar and morphology of English.
Learning a new language is always a challenge. It is essential to find someone who can teach based on your own learning style and abilities, because the grammar, vocabulary, phonics, and various nuances of the Greek language in particular require an expert in both the language and teaching. Even if it seems really hard, it does not have to be stressful, nor take an extremely long period of time, to start to become fluent in Greek. Your tutor can meet at your home or another location where you are most comfortable. Some students like to learn in a library or even a coffee shop. The timing can vary. Tutors are used to scheduling sessions around busy school and work schedules, and can even be flexible if your schedule changes often. The Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows you to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives you the flexibility to meet with your tutor at the time and location of your choice. The main thing is you need to learn Greek, whether to meet academic or personal goals, and that's not going to happen unless you have guidance and a conversation partner who can help work these efforts into your busy schedule.
Greek students come from all walks of life. From the recreational traveler looking to learn the basics for communicating on a vacation to the serious scholar looking to add to his or her research skills, a Greek language tutor can be a great help. They can also enhance your ability to read ancient Greek texts. Varsity Tutors is able to help connect many students with a wide variety of academic and personal needs to a Greek tutor that will help to meet their goals. Given the important role of Greece in our shared history, there is little reason not to fulfill your goal to learn this important but difficult language.

Recent Greek Tutoring Session Notes
The student did very well today. At the start of the session, I gave her a review of the vocabulary terms she requested. After, we went over the rest of the vocabulary words on her sheet, which she was able to remember and use conceptually. To finish off the session, I gave her a review of what we had done during today's session. Next session she will have a vocabulary test, and we will continue with a lesson from the book we've been using.
In this class, we practiced Chinese conversation and went over the Chinese textbook. The student is quite interested in getting rid of his foreign accent, he recorded our sounds and compared the difference. In next class, we will have story-telling activity.
The student had a quiz in class the following day, so we spent the session preparing. The quiz was on telling time, activities and a few new grammatical patterns. We went over the necessary vocabulary and I gave the student a mock quiz.
The student felt like he had done well on yesterday's unit test but does not have a grade yet. He reported finding it helpful that I have him review characters from previous lessons since many of them were on the test. Today he had a worksheet to complete and then we practiced writing and saying dialogues with his vocabulary words. I also spent about 15 minutes teaching parts of speech in English and in Chinese to provide a stronger foundation for him to learn grammar in the future.
We continued to practice describing the location of objects and places. We reviewed our map of China and learned more about the location of cities across the country. We sang songs and read poems about location and directions.
Today, I quizzed him on chapter 9, both vocabulary and the passage and then we went back to the article on Ukraine and tried to finish what we started. The article was a bit more complicated than last time, so we spent a bit more time on that. The student also asked if we could practice using some of the vocabulary from chapters 1-7 and we did that for the vocabulary of chapter 1. I had him try to do chapter 2 on his own for the assignment. We also started a new article, this time on North Korea and I tried to have the student look over it on his own. He struggled with some of the more professional vocabulary while the more common ones he was fine with. I had him finish the article for homework.
