Nashville Latin Tutoring FAQ

If you're in the market for a Nashville Latin tutor for you or your student, Varsity Tutors can get you set up. Latin might be considered a dead language, but its impact is very much alive. You can see the influence of Latin throughout modern English, and it serves as the basis of modern Romance languages spoken the world over. Medical practitioners, scientists, lawyers, theologians, and historians can all tell you that Latin vocabulary features prominently in their professional vernacular and assessments. If you're ready to polish your linguistic skills, investing in the services of a Nashville Latin tutor can be a smart starting point.

What are the benefits of working with a Nashville Latin tutor near me?

There is a significant upside to learning from working a Nashville Latin tutor, perhaps never so prominent as when you consider the value of being able to access their expertise. It's not that Latin is necessarily a tremendously complex language so much as it operates quite differently from its modern counterparts. This is most obvious when considering how one interprets the intent of a phrase. In most modern languages, we determine the meaning of a sentence based on word order. If you switch up the order of the words in a sentence, it typically changes the meaning of the sentence. For example, "The boy hit the ball," means one thing, while "The ball hit the boy," means something entirely different. In Latin, word order means far less than the ending of the word, or inflection does. This distinctive approach to grammar can trip up novice students.

This is part of why Nashville Latin tutoring can be so helpful. Instructors go through vigorous interviews to determine whether they have the requisite expertise to teach the material and have their communication skills evaluated to ensure they have the ability to convey that information to their students effectively. They can craft instruction strategies where the lesson plans build upon each other, starting with foundational concepts and gradually developing proficiency. Due to the one-on-one nature of the instruction, they can answer questions as they arise, avoiding the confusion that might come up during independent study. This sort of attention might be difficult to find in a classroom setting, too.

Another benefit of working with Nashville Latin tutors is that they can help with the significant memorization burden that comes with learning the language. In fairness, learning any language requires a great deal of memorization, but the requirements associated with learning Latin are much greater as a result of how the language has evolved. Considering how nouns work in Latin highlights the distinction clearly. Like Romance languages, Latin has gendered nouns, but unlike Romance languages, Latin doesn't use gendered articles or suffix-related rules for categorizing the nouns. Instead, it has three classifications: masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns. In theory, nouns are supposed to "intuitively" fall into one of these categories. A closer examination of the language shows this isn't always the case. There's nothing intuitive about the fact that flame is a feminine noun, bridge is a masculine noun, or war is a neuter noun. As a result, the only real way to ensure proficiency is rote memorization, requiring a nearly prolific amount of studying.

Once again, this is where having access to a Nashville Latin tutor to help you can be useful. They can step in as taskmaster as you attempt to commit the litany of vocabulary words to memory. Because they've been through this process before, they can introduce you to different strategies for memory retention, helping to improve your recall skills. This is another area where the one-to-one instruction pays off. Research has shown that everyone's mind works differently when it comes to recall. Some people form memories based on, as an example, visual cues. Other people are more verbally-oriented. Your instructor can work to get to know you and then tailor their approach to working with you on their findings. That might mean using flashcards with English-to-Latin translations for a verbal learner while substituting flashcards with illustrations for the visual learner. This sort of custom instruction can make your sessions more effective.

Nashville Latin tutoring can also be customized to your individual learning needs. In school, your teacher is limited by the expectations of the school year. There's a set curriculum and only so many school days in a year. They can't necessarily slow down to make sure each student is ready to move on if they want to cover all the material by the year's end, and they certainly can't skip ahead just because one student is bored. Nashville Latin tutors have more flexibility. If you've already mastered your vocab list for the week, they can get you started on next week's assignment to put you ahead of the curve. If you're struggling, though, they can allocate additional time to make sure you're prepared to do your very best.

Nashville Latin tutoring gives you the chance to engage in an environment that's most conducive to your schedule, too. If you select the online instruction option, you can participate from anywhere you have internet access by logging on to the Live Learning Platform, whether that's the campus library at Vanderbilt University or your kitchen table, connecting with your instructor using the video chat function. If you prefer in-person instruction, we can connect you with a local instructor, allowing you to arrange to meet at a location conveniently located near your home, school, or work. Either way, we will find you an instructor who has time to meet when you do. This gives you the chance to work somewhere that fits in your busy schedule while allowing you to focus on the work at hand.

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Nashville, TN
Today, the student did some translating from Latin, which went well once I helped him with some of the unfamiliar vocabulary. We then reviewed a number of grammatical topics they've covered in class this year, preparing for his exam on Wednesday. We finished off the session with some more translating.

Latin Tutoring review by Peter in Nashville, TN
The student and I began by reviewing concepts from last week. He remembered 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person very well. We then worked on new vocabulary. He learned fourteen new words. We talked about the words that these gave birth to in English (i.e. erro and "err", debeo and "debt"). We then worked on example sentences with Star Wars characters. He picked up the new vocab very well and translated the sentences easily. Great job!

Latin Tutoring review by Annie in Nashville, TN
We reviewed the 1st and 2nd declensions. I think the student's beginning to truly grasp the concepts. He's slowly being able to apply his knowledge. I want him to practice vocabulary more. I also reminded him to practice, practice, practice his endings. He only needs to review them 10 minutes a day and there will be a huge improvement. He just needs to put in the effort.

Latin Tutoring review by Nicole in Nashville, TN
Today we went over third declension neuter nouns, third declension i-stems for masculine, feminine and neuter nouns, and the ablative of manner. After we went over the rules and paradigms for these concepts we went through a few examples from the student's textbook and then spent the last twenty minutes of the session doing some English-Latin examples. She does really well on the Latin-English translations, but sometimes will get confused on forms that I know she knows. She is having a little bit of trouble with the English to Latin examples and will sometimes forget her paradigms for nouns and verbs. I would like her to use flash cards or any other method that works for her (online quizzes, etc.) to work on mastering her noun and verb paradigms.

Latin Tutoring review by Abigail in Nashville, TN
As the year winds down, the student's class seems to be holding back on introducing new topics and focusing instead on reading comprehension, translation, and Roman history and culture. Accordingly, this was the focus of our session today. We started by working through a reading comprehension exercise from her textbook. She did very well on this exercise, which was encouraging--reading for comprehension, instead of for translation, is an important skill in more advanced Latin classes. Next, we discussed the history and culture reading from her book, which was about class stratification and the setup of the Roman government. We also touched on the role of women in ancient Rome and the source of our knowledge on the ancient world. The student has shown a great deal of improvement--I look forward to continuing to work with her next year!

Latin Tutoring review by Kerry in Nashville, TN
I had another terrific session with the student this week! I really admire what he brought to his session today. He brought his usual A game to the session. We concentrated on third-declension nouns and noun-adjective agreement. Two recurrent problems for him in these exercises came to light: 1) He needs to be more careful to follow the directions of each exercise; and 2) Of the three characteristics of Latin nouns and adjectives--number, gender, and case--he repeatedly mis-translates the number. We will continue to address these issues in our next session. As usual, I'm proud of him: he worked hard, well, and with a real eagerness to learn and to master the material.
