Philadelphia Latin Tutoring FAQ

If you would like to work with a Philadelphia Latin tutor or find one for your student, Varsity Tutors can help simplify this process. Private instructors can help students at any skill level. Your student may be learning the basics, or you might be pursuing Latin fluency to better understand the Romance languages or advance your career. Philadelphia Latin tutoring provides a great opportunity to learn from an experienced instructor who can help you reach for your goals.

How can a Philadelphia Latin tutor near me help me learn the language?

Latin, the precursor to Romance languages such as Spanish, Italian, and French, is a dead language, but people often study it to understand other languages. It is also used in professions such as science, medicine, and law. Your student might be learning some Latin in school as part of their language studies. Perhaps you're considering a career in medicine or theology and learning terminology can be made easier by understanding the Latin language. A Philadelphia Latin tutor can work with you to reach for your goals, providing the necessary support along the way.

Philadelphia Latin tutors are experienced in helping students in a one-on-one environment. Therefore, they can cater directly to your needs without classroom distractions. Focused on your specific needs, they can create a customized study plan that addresses your greatest areas of opportunity. The learning process can also go at your pace, so you can stop and ask questions at any time, while your instructor can continue with a topic until you understand it. When you understand something more quickly, your mentor can move forward sooner so your time can be spent more efficiently.

You can learn a great deal from a Philadelphia Latin tutor. Study sessions can focus on any area of need, including pronunciation that can take some patience and practice to learn. However, you don't need to worry about pronouncing words correctly since Latin isn't spoken in any particular community anymore. Your instructor, however, can help you learn Latin vocabulary and practice reading Latin poetry and prose. For many students, learning vocabulary isn't that difficult because a number of words are nearly identical in English. Areas your mentor might cover include inflection. In Latin, the ending of words is more important than word order in determining the meaning of a sentence.

No matter what challenges arise along the way, your instructor can apply a variety of instructional methods. They can use flashcards if you are a visual learner. This is one effective example of teaching methods that can be applied. Aural, tactical, and verbal learners can be accommodated as well. A variety of exercises can be included in your lessons, including opportunities to write in Latin. Topics you're less familiar with can be taught such that your mistakes will be corrected, guiding you towards proper usage. During your study sessions, you can work on fluency and learn to communicate with others in Latin.

How do I fit time with Philadelphia Latin tutors into my schedule?

This style of instruction is very flexible. You, your student's, or your family's schedule does not have to get in the way of acquiring Latin skills. We can help find someone with the skills and availability to meet with you at a convenient time. Therefore, your family's scheduling requirements can be respected while your language learning goals can be addressed by an experienced mentor.

The options we offer also help you take advantage of Philadelphia Latin tutoring. Online and in-person tutoring are both offered. If you choose online instruction, you and your instructor can work together via our Live Learning Platform. It includes video chat that enables you and your mentor to work face-to-face, while a virtual whiteboard and document editor help to deliver each lesson and cover the necessary content. Your instructor can therefore effortlessly discuss the gender of nouns, agreement of adjectives, or use of verbs and common phrases. But if in-person instruction is your preferred route, we can find an educator nearby who can help. You can meet anywhere you'd like, including at home, or as many students prefer, at a coffee shop or Independence Library.

Another option to supplement your academic studies is an online Latin language course. You can collaborate with your peers, with the leadership of an expert instructor, in a virtual classroom. This is an effective means to learn and be motivated to practice while working together can help you build fluency. With multiple course sections available, you or your student can find one at a time slot that works. A busy schedule doesn't get in the way of your learning needs.

No matter which method you choose, you can receive a comprehensive look into using Latin words and expressions as well as gender, including the neuter gender, used in Latin . Studying with a mentor can help you practice reading Latin and learn even more about the history of the Latin language.

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Philadelphia, PA
Today we did some final review for the student's Latin exam. She had a few areas she was concerned about, which we reviewed. First, we went over some of the verbal system again, as she struggled with how to keep the distinction between the imperfect and perfect tenses clear. I tried to straighten up some of the misconceptions she had there, and we reviewed the different forms and went over how all the tenses relate to one another, both in terms of form and meaning. After this, we took a look at pronominal adjectives, which are mostly like other adjectives, but have a few forms that instead correspond to pronouns. Again here we reviewed the basic concept, and I pointed out that all the pronominal adjectives have somewhat related meanings, as opposed to any old adjective off the street.

Reviewed one of her recent tests. Reviewed interrogative adjectives and pronouns, translation, verb forms, and the dative of possession. She simply needs to study consistently and occasionally have some things explained to her.

Latin Tutoring review by Hannah in Philadelphia, PA
In our session, the student and I completed the prose composition exercise we began in the previous session. For each sentence, I asked him to identify the subject(s), verb(s), direct object(s), and indirect object(s). I also asked him to identify the case, number, and gender of nouns and person, number, and tense of verbs. We reviewed temporal cum clauses and the third person demonstrative pronoun, is, ea, id. We also reviewed uses of the ablative case, infinitives, and the fourth declension. Now that the student understands the basics of Latin grammar, he will have to work toward mastering the four verb conjugations and five noun declensions so his parsing can continue to improve.

After that we worked on her math and decimals. We ended the session by working on her language arts and idioms - hyperboles - alliteration - simile - metaphors, etc.

Latin Tutoring review by Christopher in Philadelphia, PA
Our session today was twofold: Latin and Classics. On the Latin side, the student did well on his last test. He had a few wrong answers on some worksheets to correct to receive extra credit, which he did under my supervision without needing much help. I also ran some verb conjugation drills to keep him on his toes; aside from a few slip-ups with the future tense of 3rd and 4th conjugation verbs, he did quite well. He made it through the assigned reading and successfully answered the questions associated with it; he was doing well enough by the end that we went ahead and did some of the readings he has upcoming for next week.

Latin Tutoring review by Mary in Philadelphia, PA
Since the next chapter the student's class is about to start deals with the present perfect, we clarified the different types of past forms - imperfect and present perfect - in English before talking about the Latin formation. He did a good job with a pretty challenging topic and was doing quite well with recognizing the clues for perfect forms.
