What Does a Los Angeles LSAT Class Cover?
The LSAT consists of four sections: Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Writing. For the first three sections, you will use a digital tablet provided to you at the test center. To select an answer, tap on the screen. The tablet has other intuitive features, including a timer with a five-minute warning, the ability to highlight content, and to flag questions you might want to go back to.
The Reading Comprehension section is 35 minutes long and features long-form texts from which you must point out the main idea, explicitly stated information, or the information or ideas that can be inferred. Based on their context, you must identify the meaning or purpose of words or phrases. Questions may require you to identify analogies to a text's claim or argument, how new information affects meaning, and the author's attitude based on a passage's tone.
In the 30-minute Analytical Reasoning section, you must demonstrate how well you understand the structure of presented relationships and use that aptitude to draw conclusions. Your performance depends on your ability to reason with conditional statements, infer what could or must be true based on facts/rules presented, and infer on truth based on facts or rules in conjunction with new hypothetical information. For some questions, two statements are provided, in which you must identify context that is logically equivalent.
The Logical Reasoning section is 70 minutes and consists of two sections. It requires you to analyze, evaluate, and complete arguments in content taken from newspapers, magazines, scholarly publications, advertisements, and informal discourse. The skills assessed include your ability to recognize parts of an argument and their relationships, as well as similarities and differences between patterns of reasoning. The conclusions you draw must be well-supported. Your ability to reason by analogy, apply principles and rules, and recognize misunderstandings, points of disagreement, or assumptions based on presented arguments will also be measured.
A Writing section is also included in the LSAT. While it is unscored, you must read a prompt and choose between two positions or courses of action. Your response must defend your choice and showcase your argumentative writing skills, reasoning, organization, usage of language, and clarity. The position you take is not right or wrong. Any law school to which you apply will receive your writing sample. The LSAT Writing test is administered via a secure online platform separate from the multiple-choice questions; also, you have a year from when you take the rest of the LSAT to complete it.
