If you are interested in having your child attend an independent or private school, you may want to consider enrolling them in a Phoenix ISEE class by contacting Varsity Tutors. The ISEE is a standardized test that is used by many independent and private schools as a part of their admissions process. As such, performing well on the ISEE may be beneficial in helping your student pursue the private school of their choice.
The ISEE is divided into four levels, including Primary, Lower, Middle, and Upper. The Primary Level test is offered to students who are entering 2nd through 4th grade. The Lower Level test is given to students who are entering 5th or 6th grade. The Middle Level test is offered to students who are entering 7th or 8th grade and the Upper Level test is given to students who are in 9th grade and above.
What can a Phoenix ISEE class help my student review?
The Lower, Middle, and Upper Level tests all contain the same five sections, which include Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and an Essay. The Upper, Middle, and Lower levels all have the same timing and number of questions as each other. They do have differences though when it comes to the material presented on the test. What follows is a brief overview of the five different sections across the Lower, Middle, and Upper Level tests and what your student can expect on each section and level.
Verbal Reasoning
On the Upper, Middle, and Lower Levels of the ISEE, the Verbal Reasoning Section contains 40 questions and students have 20 minutes to complete it. The Lower Level test requires students to use context clues to complete sentences and to know vocabulary that elementary and middle school students should be familiar with. The Middle Level test requires students to be familiar with middle and high school-level vocabulary and the parts of speech. The Upper Level test requires students to understand high school-level vocabulary and to answer questions about synonyms.
Quantitative Reasoning
On all three levels of the test, the Quantitative Reasoning section has 37 questions and students have 35 minutes to complete it. This section examines students' abilities when it comes to math skills. The Lower Level test focuses on number logic, comparison, and estimation. It may be helpful for your student to be familiar with basic math concepts, such as multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition.
The Middle Level test focuses on geometry, data analysis, and algebra. It could be beneficial for your student to understand how to use decimals, fractions, and integers, among other concepts. The Upper Level test covers problem-solving, probability, and measurement. It could be useful for your student to understand how to measure objects and how to find the area and perimeter of various geometric shapes.
Reading Comprehension
The Reading Comprehension section contains 36 questions and students have 35 minutes to finish it. The Lower Level test focuses on reading through passages and identify the main points. It may be useful for your student to be familiar with various vocabulary words and have an understanding of tone and style.
The Middle Level test focuses on answering questions regarding various passages and being able to infer information that wasn't explicitly stated within the passage. Finally, the Upper Level test requires students to compare and contrast information and identify cause and effect within a passage.
Math Achievement
The Math Achievement section contains 47 questions and students have 40 minutes to finish it. Overall, this section is designed to measure students' skills when it comes to math operations. The Lower Level test looks at probability, algebraic concepts, and whole numbers. The Middle Level test examines prime factorization, ratios and proportions, and integer comparisons, to name a few concepts. Finally, the Upper Level test looks at quadrilaterals and triangles, exponents, and word problems, among other concepts.
Essay
In this section, students are provided with an essay prompt and given 30 minutes to write an essay. At each level, students are given a prompt that contains a topic that students at their respective grade levels may find interesting. The essay portion of the ISEE is designed to give students an opportunity to tell their potential schools a little bit more about themselves.
Primary Level ISEE
The Primary ISEE contains between three and four sections. For students in 2nd grade, there is an Auditory Comprehension Section, which involves six questions. Students are asked to listen to passages and answer questions about the passages.
For students in 2nd through 4th grade, the ISEE contains a Reading Section, a Math Section, and a Writing Sample. The Reading Section covers vocabulary words that are considered grade-appropriate and also assesses students' reading comprehension skills.
The Math Section covers questions regarding basic math and is designed to measure a student's math skills. Finally, the Writing Section requires students to look at a picture and tell a story about it. This section is not graded, but it will be sent to their potential schools as an indicator of their creativity, personality, and writing ability.
How can a Phoenix ISEE course help my student prepare?
Phoenix ISEE courses are held in an online environment. This can be valuable because it helps make it easier for you to find a course that fits into your and your student's schedule. Whether your student is participating in extracurricular activities like gymnastics or wrestling or simply has a lot of homework, it can be difficult to find time to study for a standardized test. Enrolling your student in a Phoenix ISEE course can help though because your student can take their course in your own home at a time that fits into their busy schedule.
Additionally, the way their course is set up can provide many benefits. The course is set up to be similar to a regular class in the sense that your student will be working with an instructor and fellow students. The instructor can help with reviewing material while the other students are available to collaborate with your student in class discussions and group activities.
How can I enroll my student in a Phoenix ISEE prep course?
Enrolling your student in a Phoenix ISEE prep course is as simple as reaching out to Varsity Tutors either over the phone or online. You can sign your student up for either a two-week or four-week session based on their needs.
