What does a Pittsburgh MCAT class cover?
Taking time to prepare for the MCAT can be crucial in helping you effectively apply the skills assessed in the test. They can help you highlight your strengths and weaknesses before test day and teach you helpful test-taking tips and strategies. The exam's four sections are Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning skills, Biological and Bio-Chemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior.
The Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems consists of 59 questions, with 10 passage-based sets of 4 to 6 questions and 15 non-passage related questions. You will have 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete this section. The subjects focused on here are: basic biochemistry, introductory physics, as well as organic, inorganic, and general chemistry. You need to show that you comprehensively understand the basic chemical and physical principles of living systems. You should also have a knowledge of the periodic table and how the biochemical functions of body systems relate to physics and chemical reactions.
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning part of the test will have 9 passage based sets of questions with 5 to 7 questions in each set to be answered in 1 hour and 30 minutes. Here your goal is to demonstrate an aptitude in verbal reasoning, analytical skills, and reading comprehension. English, as well as disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, will also be tested here. Key concepts to know and apply are the ability to translate information and ideas from the passages into new contexts. You should know the basic components of a text, and you should be able to extrapolate any significant meaning from the ideas and compositional elements presented.
In the Biological and Bio-Chemical Foundations of Living Systems section, you have 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete 10 passage based sets of questions, with 4 to 6 questions per set and 15 independent questions. Key concepts here are concerned with the processes unique to living organisms. These concepts involve general chemistry, basic biochemistry, organic chemistry, and introductory biology. You should show that you have a core understanding of the biological means by which cells and organ systems grow, reproduce, adapt to environments, and maintain an internal equilibrium.
The final section is Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior, and it also contains 10 passage based sets of questions with 4 to 6 questions each set and 15 standalone. For this section, you again are given 1 hour and 35 minutes to answer the questions. You will be tested in biology, introductory sociology, and introductory psychology. You will also need to show that you have the skills needed to work with an increasingly diverse population and succeed in a medical career. You should be demonstrating your ability to understand behavioral impact on physical and mental health issues, in addition to understanding how psychological, social, and cultural factors can influence well-being.

...science. I am also currently applying to medical school. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. Having been a student-athlete in college, with volunteering, physician shadowing, and work commitments, I understand the difficulties with school and struggling with certain subjects. I tutor to help other students learn more, find success in the classroom, and do better for a brighter future.

...engaged with. I enjoy attending all sorts of cultural events, especially those that offer unique and differing opinions from my own. From the country flea market to the civic opera, watching blockbuster films to the independent arthouse offerings, I like to engage with all of the cultural productions that are available to me. It is in that spirit of 'Carpe Diem' that I enjoy being a part of the creative, living world around us.... My philosophy is that critical thinking is at the core of all academic success. If you can generate good ideas and talk about them, then you can write successful papers. Writing is simply communicating through another medium. Creating dialogue and discourse with students regarding their writing assignment allows students to see how much they actually know about their topic and allows me to see the themes that they may not notice themselves. Once students become aware that they have something to say, then we can work on prewriting and editing techniques and tips to craft a paper that clearly expresses their thoughts in an appropriate academic format.
