Richmond PSAT Tutoring FAQ
The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The test is great for students to gauge their standing before beginning preparation for the SAT or ACT college entrance exams. The PSAT provides students the chance to become comfortable with timed tests and overcome any test anxiety they feel before they move on to the higher stakes entrance exams. In addition to providing great practice and an opportunity to hone test-taking skills, students who perform at an exceptional level on the PSAT will be eligible to receive prestigious scholarship funds. All of the tutors that Varsity Tutors' educational directors can connect you with in Richmond, VA, are skilled in teaching the PSAT.
There are three versions of the PSAT, designed for different grade levels. The PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT 10 are used to gauge student progress and academic level and are not used to determine scholarship awards. These tests are taken in eighth, ninth, or tenth grade, respectively. The PSAT/ NMSQT is used to determine scholarship eligibility, and is taken during October of a student's sophomore or junior year. All three versions of the test are 2 hours and 45 minutes long, and include two sections: evidence-based reading and writing, and math.
