SAT Verbal Tutoring FAQ

If you're preparing for college admissions exams, Varsity Tutors can connect you with qualified SAT Verbal tutoring to help bolster your review. Admissions into college programs can be very competitive. Scoring well on the SAT can help separate you from other applicants by illustrating your ability to comprehend college-level course material. Preparing for the SAT Verbal section necessitates a well-rounded approach that touches on everything from reading comprehension to critical reasoning. Studying with an instructor who has expert knowledge of what you can expect to encounter on the exam can help you cover all of your bases.

What are the benefits of learning from SAT Verbal tutors?

In the SAT Verbal section, you will have 65 minutes to complete 52 questions, meaning that you must read carefully and work efficiently. Reviewing with SAT Verbal tutors is a great way to refine your test-taking skills. Since a large portion of this section will be composed of text-based passages, it will be important to read efficiently and thoroughly. Studying with an SAT tutor to develop skills such as time management and critical thinking can help you work more confidently on exam day.

Studying alongside an academic mentor provides you with the ability to take part in lessons that specifically address your areas of need. Rather than following a general course curriculum, your mentor can work to identify your knowledge gaps and develop a lesson plan that methodically addresses them. If you are struggling to identify arguments in scholarly articles, your mentor can provide you with sample texts and work alongside you to help build up your critical reading skills. Individual instruction also means that you can skip topics that you are already comfortable with, ensuring that you are only spending your time studying relevant concepts.

The customized assistance you get from SAT Verbal tutoring doesn't stop with the ability to direct the focus of each session, either. Private instructors are able to use a variety of teaching techniques when teaching a challenging topic. For example, if you learn better through short lectures and discussions, your instructor can guide you through different texts to help you identify relationships between them and infer meaning from various passages. Since the SAT Verbal section also contains graphics, your instructor can also use visual aids such as concept maps, graphs, or charts to help you hone your graphic interpretation skills.

We know that it can be tough to fit the extra study time into your hectic schedule. Between school, extra-curricular, and personal commitments, you are probably already stretched thin. One thing your instructor can focus on is teaching you how to study smarter. By streamlining your review and focusing your attention solely on your areas of need, you can save yourself precious time. If you choose to meet with your instructor online, you will attend sessions in our Live Learning Platform, where you will be able to see, hear, and interact with your instructor in real time. If you prefer the intimacy of in-person instruction, you can choose to hold your sessions at your home or a local library after school. Regardless of which option you choose, you can be assured that you will receive top-notch instruction from qualified instructors.

How can I get connected to SAT Verbal tutors near me?

Whether you're just beginning your review or starting to feel study fatigue, working with an expert instructor can help invigorate your studies. Studying alone for an exam can be a daunting task. Varsity Tutors can connect you with an instructor in less than 24 hours. Our educational consultants are standing by, ready to answer your questions. Online SAT Verbal Tutoring review by Sandy
I provided the student with a syllabus outlining the remaining lessons. I gave her new vocabulary flash cards and a vocabulary quiz, which I will grade at home. I also gave her a worksheet for SAT essay writing (focused on finding five sources). I then gave her a grammar worksheet focused on adverbs, verbs, parallelism, and gerund vs. infinitive. Finally, I taught her about "active reading," for the SAT reading section. I gave her homework focused on vocabulary, essay writing, grammar, and reading.

We covered the single and multiple blank fill-ins, as well as identifying grammatical mistakes. The student seems to achieve better scores on this, than on essay writing. She seems more comfortable with the materials as well as the techniques. The student needs to study vocabulary, and word stems, prefixes and suffixes.

The student and I focused on her SSAT preparation briefly paying special attention to synonym identification. We agreed that practicing vocabulary words will be crucial to her success in this. Then we turned to SAT preparation in the fill-in-the-blank verbal section. We worked on identifying clue words and phrases and eliminating incorrect options.

We discussed new methods for dealing with completion questions by roughly formulating an answer prior to reviewing the multiple choice options. We also discussed some useful sources for further time-saving strategies for reading passages and an "end game" strategy for our last several sessions before the SAT.

We went over Practice Test 2, section 2 (critical reading) and section 4 (writing). Before the writing segment of the test, we reviewed the different types of writing errors, so that they are primed and the student is more prone to look for them as he goes through the questions. We went over four more weeks of vocabulary lists, and began memorizing idioms as well.

Online SAT Verbal Tutoring review by Claire
The student and I worked on sentence completion and critical reading (she is making very good progress and scored extremely well on the practice test sections assigned for homework) she has been doing a lot better at applying the strategies we have practiced to actual test questions. For the second half of the session we worked on math, in particular functions and graphing. She struggles with some of the more conceptual questions but is showing improvement. As always she is cooperative, prepared and enthusiastic.
