Recent Dayton Study Skills and Organization Tutoring Session Notes

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Chad in Dayton, OH
This session centered on the student's Unit 5 Biology exam. We went through his review and took down comprehensive notes on all topics that were in need of further attention. Ecology was the primary focus and much detail was given to the flow of energy throughout the web of life, the types of consumers (primary, secondary, etc.), the feeding types of a variety of organisms (herbivores, carnivores, etc.), climate and weather, and the growth and decay of populations within given ecosystems. He seemed confident in his retention levels and felt that he was duly prepared for his exam.

The student is still readjusting to school now that he is back from spring break. Today we started off with getting him reorganized. The student is continuing to do a better job keeping himself organized, which is great to see. He completed another current event for his social studies project. He was challenged with comprehension towards the articles he was reading for his current event. Sometimes he will reword what he has read without fully understanding it. We spent time talking about his current event and how/why it was important to him and to others. I had him read out loud his current event summary as a tool for recognizing grammatical errors in his writing. The student is getting back into the swing of school nicely and worked hard today.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Carin in Dayton, OH
The student has a project due for English (the only class where she is getting a B instead of an A). We started by discussing her game plan for completing her project. First, she had to pick a leader from the list provided, and then she needed to gather information. She chose Henry Ford and started taking notes on his background and vital statistics. She was able to organize most of the information she will need to turn in her outline. After that, we moved on to discussing some study strategies. We talked about over learning (very effective), teaching others, and reading strategies, and I directed her to some sites where she can practice problems from math and science and create citations for her papers and projects.

Student 1 and I talked through what she could possibly do for her book report and worked on some multiplication. Student 2 did very well and even though he did not have anything do tomorrow, he got out his math worksheet that is due Wednesday and worked on that.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Erika in Dayton, OH
The student brought along some packages of practice test questions to work through today. He requested we go through the state exam questions first as this is an area of weakness on his test scores. The questions focus on licensure and state regulations. We worked through about 65 questions over the course of the session. The questions have some tricky language that can cause confusion. We identified some areas that came up often in the questions including differences in requirements for types of real estate agents. I believe a chart to designate the differences would help him with studying. The student plans to retake the exam in a couple of weeks, so we will continue to work through practice exam questions including math problems.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Allison in Dayton, OH
I checked in with the student on the time management tools and techniques we reviewed last week: the daily log, planner, and to do list. He filled out his planner, but needs to complete the log for this week, so that we can see where and what is wasting time during the day. We then went over his past week assignments and made a plan for the upcoming week. Finally, we worked on organization, focusing on his backpack and binder. We organized both of this in order of class and removed all loose paper from his backpack. I recommended he purchase section dividers for each academic subject to organize his binder by: notes, handouts, quizzes/tests, homework, assignments, and blank paper. We finished the session by going over his Spanish homework and reviewing the plan for the week.
