I am a senior at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania studying Finance and Operations & Information Management. I am an Executive Board Member of one of the largest community service groups on campus, the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project, so I have had plenty of experience tutoring elementary and middle school students in reading and math in the Philadelphia area. Prior to my experience tutoring in Philadelphia, I ran an online writing program teaching essential writing skills to elementary school students and served as an Algebra I instructor at a local community center. I enjoy tutoring math up to Algebra 2, SAT Math, and editing essays (including college essays) because helping students build math foundations that will help them for the rest of their life is rewarding and I greatly enjoy editing essays! I have a very flexible tutoring style - I am approachable and willing to answer any questions related to the material. Hopefully, I can explain things as simply as possible so they stick. Outside of school, I enjoy piano, dancing, visiting museums, art, and discovering new foods and restaurants. Looking forward to tutoring!

I'm a recent college graduate living in West Philadelphia. I graduated from Oberlin College in May of 2015, where I majored in Environmental Studies and minored in Politics. I love to play music, dance, make art and play basketball with my friends. I'm passionate about youth education and mentoring and I think everyone deserves the opportunity for a quality education. I have been tutor with Varsity Tutors for over a year, and volunteered as a tutor with the National Honor Society and Let's Get Ready - an organization that offers free SAT-prep for underserved youth. I love to tutor in social studies, humanities, and life sciences, and have a lot of experience in tutoring for AP and SAT tests. My basic outlook on education is that 1. Everyone is intelligent and capable of learning 2. People have diverse interests and passions 3. Everyone learns in a unique way. If we spend our time following our passions and figuring out what learning style works best for us, than our education can be transformative. One of the primary problems of our education system is the lack of individualized learning time, and personal relationship building between teacher and student. I think we tend to use a one size fits all approach with education because our schools and teachers don't have the time or resources to respond to the needs of every student. I believe that 1-on-1 tutoring, mentoring and education is essential for developing learning practices that are effective for you. I'm excited to work with you!

These experiences inspired me to continue this passion, striving to make learning a fun, insightful, and a lifelong process while helping students learn in the easiest and most effective way possible. My favorite subject to teach is math, specifically the SAT/ACT math sections. As someone who values education and intellectual curiosity, I hope to impose this same philosophy on my students. Stephanie's graduate work in film studies — where every seminar meant defending an interpretation against skeptical peers — built the same core skill LSAT Logical Reasoning tests: identifying whether an argument's evidence actually supports its conclusion or just sounds persuasive. She teaches students to treat each stimulus like a critical essay, isolating the thesis (conclusion) and checking whether the supporting points (premises) hold up or contain hidden leaps. Her 4.9 rating speaks to an approach that makes abstract argument structures feel concrete and repeatable.

I'm Sophie, and I'm a medical student with a passion for teaching. I want to work with patients, but my other goal is to go into academic medicine. I can't picture my present or future without education in it. I began tutoring for my little sister when both of us were in high school, helping her with math, English, science, and Spanish. In college, I started branching out to tutor friends. In 2019 I began volunteer tutoring for my college's chemistry department, and soon after, I took on a job at a local tutoring center teaching biology and chemistry (and occasionally physics and math) to high school students. Since taking the MCAT and scoring 99th percentile, I started tutoring for that as well. Biology and chemistry are my main teaching areas: chemistry because I've had the most tutoring experience in it, and biology because I have practical experience through lab research and patient care. I can also teach math or physics (I used to be an engineering student so I know those subjects well). I pride myself on bringing a real passion for the subjects I teach. I also strive to abolish simple; disjointed memorization and help my students see their subject matter through a logical, problem-solving oriented lens. I look forward to learning with you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Score improvement depends on your starting point and effort level, but most students see meaningful gains within 8-12 weeks of focused work. Logical Reasoning makes up about half of the LSAT, so strengthening this section often has a significant impact on your overall score. A tutor can help you identify whether you're struggling with question types, pacing, or reasoning patterns—then target those specific weaknesses rather than studying blindly.

Most students struggle with three main areas: identifying the question type quickly (assumption, strengthen, weaken, flaw, etc.), distinguishing between close answer choices, and managing time under pressure. Many also find it hard to separate the author's argument from their own opinions, which leads to incorrect answers. A tutor can teach you to recognize patterns in question construction and develop a systematic approach so you're not second-guessing yourself on test day.

Pacing improves through deliberate practice with timed drills, starting with untimed work to build accuracy, then gradually adding time pressure. Many students rush through stimulus passages and miss key details, while others get stuck on one question and run out of time. A tutor can help you develop a personalized rhythm—knowing when to skip a tough question, how long to spend on each part, and which question types to tackle first based on your strengths.

The LSAT tests about 10-12 core question types across the two Logical Reasoning sections, with assumption, strengthen, weaken, and flaw questions appearing most often. Each type requires a different approach—for example, assumption questions ask what the argument depends on, while weaken questions ask what would undermine it. Learning to spot these patterns quickly and apply the right strategy is key to improving your score efficiently.

Your first session typically focuses on understanding where you stand—a tutor will review a recent practice test or sample questions to identify which question types trip you up and whether your challenges are conceptual or time-based. From there, you'll create a study plan tailored to your goals and timeline, whether you're aiming for a specific score or preparing for an upcoming test date. This diagnostic approach ensures your tutoring time is spent on what actually matters for your improvement.

Practice tests are essential—they build your stamina, help you identify patterns in your mistakes, and let you practice timing under realistic conditions. Most successful LSAT test-takers complete 20-40 full practice tests before test day. A tutor can help you use practice tests strategically: reviewing your wrong answers to spot trends, adjusting your approach based on what you learn, and building confidence as you see your score improve over time.

Test anxiety often stems from uncertainty about what to expect or doubt in your abilities—tutoring addresses both. By mastering question types, building a reliable strategy, and practicing under timed conditions, you develop genuine confidence rather than false reassurance. A tutor can also teach you test-day techniques like managing your mental energy, knowing when to move on from a tough question, and staying calm when you encounter unfamiliar question variations.

Look for tutors with strong LSAT scores themselves (typically 170+), proven teaching experience with Logical Reasoning specifically, and familiarity with current LSAT format and question types. They should be able to explain not just the right answer, but why wrong answers are tempting and how to avoid those traps. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have deep knowledge of the test and can adapt their teaching to your learning style and goals.
