Tutoring review by Kiera in Maricopa, AZ
The student continues to be working on Geometry in class. We briefly covered how to write recursive and explicit series as we were working on a few weeks ago. Then we began to cover the Geometry proofs she just started working on in class. As this is a new topic and it has not covered extensively yet, her knowledge of how to write the proofs was limited. There are many theorems that she still needs to learn to be able to solve the questions with more ease, but I think by the end of the session she had a very good sense for how to approach the problems and how to logic through them. We will continue to work on them.

The student explained to me her situation and that she had failed calculus previously and will be retaking it in the fall. She wants a review of the entire subject at a comfortable pace to her and with explanation and detailed examples catering to her needs and speed of learning. We got started as soon as we discussed our plan for a few minutes, with the definition of a limit and several ways to evaluate limits. She remembered most of this, and we sailed through it, with a snag on trigonometric functions, which we will have to review in depth due to her lack of remembrance of the unit circle and trig properties. At the very end, I asked her to explain the difference between an average and instantaneous rate of change, and her answer was satisfactory. Then came the function and graphical definitions of a derivative, which we will continue with next time. All in all, a great start.

Tutoring review by Andrea in Maricopa, AZ
The student has a speech coming up for running for class representative. He has to speak for one minute about why he would be a good leader. He had a really hard time coming up with positive qualities about himself or things that he is good at. We did come up with several attributes and examples of good leadership skills. His homework is to go through the brainstorming items and put them in order/ write a rough draft of his speech. We also went over his essay homework on Hatchet. We checked to see if he had all the requisite sentences for the body paragraphs (IEDEDC). Then, we wrote the body paragraph of a new essay, following the correct format.

This was my first session with the student. For this session, he wanted to cover some basic principles of functions in pre-cal. He also had homework related to step-wise functions. We covered how to graph the functions as well as how to compose composite functions out of simple functions. I also discussed with the family about future plans for both SAT and subject tutoring.

Today we went over the optimization problems. The challenges for solving these questions are to come up with a function that models the situation, and to find the endpoints (recall that max/min of a function in a given differentiable interval only occurs at its critical points and endpoints). We went over several examples, and the student seemed to get more and more proficient. At first he did not know where to start, but after I hinted to him, he could solve the problem on this own later.
