Tutoring review by Michael in McKeesport, PA
The student and I continued studying for his final focusing on different methods of solving for the area of regular and irregular shapes, as well as the surface area of 3-D object and their volumes. We worked for an extended time on the calculation of the volume of a strange shape, which actually turned out to be a 3-D pyramid with the top cut off (similar to a frustum, which is a 3-D cone, with the top sliced off). I attempted to use inquiry and work the problem through with him. He did well solving all other problems with a high level of competence.

The student and I worked on his homework for sections 5.8 and 6.1, which covered antiderivatives and the beginnings of integration. Problems involved solving simple differential equations and initial value problems, using the sigma notation for Riemann sums to approximate integrals, and understanding definite integrals as the area under a curve. He is doing much better at working independently on his homework. We also discussed some strategies for studying for his upcoming midterm on his own before we meet. He feels that he did well on the recent quiz.

The student and I did some passage and fill-in-the-blank practice problems. We also did a diagnostic test and a practice test. Based on the diagnostic he still needs to work on Humanities and Natural Science passage questions, as well as two-blank questions. He's doing really well on single-blank questions, Literary Fiction and Social Science practice questions. Good work!

I went over multiplying and dividing fractions and whole numbers with both students. I also went over converting fractions to decimals and vice versa. I gave them both problems on these and they handled them well. They both had good attitudes today.

Tutoring review by Kelsy in McKeesport, PA
The student and I looked at a few of the problems I left him with last week. He was able to do several on his own and only needed a little assistance with the last two. He then worked on his homework for the night which was multiplying polynomial functions; after walking him through one of them he was able to do it on his own for the remainder. I left him with 4 extra homework problems on factoring polynomials, solving a system of linear equations with three variables, adding polynomial functions and multiplying polynomials. He appeared to have a firm grasp on the material that we covered.

The student continued to work with sprinkler application problems. Included in our session today were fractions, decimals, metric to metric linear conversions, metric to customary conversions, customary to metric conversions, as well as metric to customary area conversions and vice versa. He did well during the lesson and was very smooth and fluid in his calculations, only needing minor adjustments from time to time.
