Yesterday afternoon the student and I worked on reviewing chapter 9 material on our own, as he didn't have any math homework or quizzes coming up. We reviewed graphing quadratic equations and solving those kinds of questions by graphing. He did a great job remembering the vertex formula and all of the steps necessary to graph the parabola.

Tutoring review by Aunaly in Moore, OK
We worked through two of the worksheets the student had for homework. Both of them involved finding areas of segments and sectors of circles. Two of the problems that she had trouble with involved finding the area of the segment. We broke the problem down into smaller steps and she was able to complete them. The other problem she struggled with was finding the general formula for finding the angle at which a segment that is half the area of the sector. We started by finding a general equation for the area of the sector and then finding a general area of the segment. We then related the two and simplified the equation down to a point in which she could then use guess and check to find at which angle the segment is half the area of the sector.

In this evening's session, the student and I worked in the subject area of math. We utilizing a math app, the student practiced calculations with integers across operations in isolation. This practice is a continuation of our previous focus on integers specifically as it related to solving systems of equations. Additionally, we began post assessments in math. In our session on Thursday, we will continue these assessments and prepare for a social studies final.

Tutoring review by Paul in Moore, OK
We began the session by reviewing a couple of papers that the student had recently completed for school. The first one, which was for his Language Arts class, was very well written. There were no problems regarding commas. I saw only one instance in which a word should have been omitted. I also read sections of a lab report that he had completed for chemistry. I noted one instance in which he should have used a comma. He has shown a significant amount of improvement in the use of commas. I am very pleased with his progress in this area. I had him read several passages, and I asked questions concerning main idea, fact recall, and inferences. I also had him read passages in which he had to answer questions based on his own inferences. I had to provide him with some prompts on a few of the questions, but overall he did very well. We reviewed comma use; I had him insert commas into 11 given sentences as needed. For our next session, we will continue to work on inferences and fact recall. I also told the student that he is welcome to bring more of his writing to our next session, but that it is okay if he does not have any available. He stated that he expects to have some writing available. We will meet next Friday at the same time.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Moore, OK
The student has amazing focus for a full hour. I decided to switch the writing prompt this week because she has written two organized papers that focus on issues of schools. I gave her a free write writing assignment that focuses on spooky Halloween stories for kids. The free write enables students to be more creative in their responses as opposed to following a rubric. She has a lot of interest in the subject, but I stressed character development and establishing the setting in her writing. We came up with a great math game that correlates to red light, green light. She has to have rapid fire responses in order to make it across the room. She forgot to do her Star Wars word problems, so she will work on that. I asked her to do more free writing on her computer as well that focuses on the spooky theme. It was a very good day.
