Tutoring review by Julia in Niagara Falls, NY
Continuing our focus on the "frantic, roaring" 1920's, the student completed Unit 7, Lessons 8, 10 and 11. Lesson 8 "Tell Us What It Means" entailed writing a mock-up "newspaper" about the 1920's. Prompts in the form of headlines were provided in the workbook. He was directed to think of the work as an English Language Arts assignment, to find main ideas and supporting details, and to say sentences before writing them. He also began thinking about using strong vocabulary, writing in his own words, being concise and using proper spelling and grammar. This was challenging but the student enjoyed the assignment, earning a grade of 41/45 or 91%. Lesson 9 was optional and was skipped. Lesson 10 "Boom and Bust" taught about the presidency of Herbert Hoover and the crash of the stock market in 1928. He scored 100% on a short quiz after reading aloud from the textbook. The stock market crashed because it was over-stretched like a balloon, with people wantonly borrowing money and buying stock to get rich quickly. Hoover promised "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage", but he could not deliver. Lesson 11 "Suffering" explained how the farmland became a "Dust Bowl," farmers moved to the city and lived in cardboard shanties, and banks closed. Farmlands were plagued by drought and loss of soils. His quiz score for Lesson 11 was 100%. He has learned a lot about the 1920's and is able to discuss it verbally with excellent recall of over-arching ideas.

Tutoring review by Martina-Alexandra in Niagara Falls, NY
The student and I began her Roots 1 book to better understand root words. She completed the pretest. After I encouraged her to take her best guess at what the words provided mean, she did quite well in connecting prefixes and suffixes she already knew. She completed the first two lessons of the book and began the review, which I had her finish as homework. She definitely improved in her ability to recognize the meaning of certain prefixes and suffixes by the end of the session! I also assigned he a daily journal of writing for 20 minutes straight to get her used to writing more.

Tutoring review by Melissa in Niagara Falls, NY
In this session, we covered concepts related to literary terms, sentence clarity, and construction. We also worked on simplifying and condensing quotations. The student has an excellent grasp of literary ideas. He ended the session with a positive view of his paper and seemed to feel that it has been improved. I offered a few strategies, such as including strong verbs, using the thesaurus function in a word processor such as the free Openoffice, reading the material aloud, using background music such as Mozart, and having "another pair of eyes" look at his work to double-check for errors. We discussed the possibility of further sessions for English as well as scheduling time to work out a study system for history.
