Recent Piedmont Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Mark in Piedmont, CA
As it was our first session, the student and I spoke for roughly fifteen minutes about her school subjects, homework, tests, hobbies, and interests. She caught me up on the structure of her Math, Social Studies, Science, and English Language Arts classes, as well as what topics they've covered lately. In Math, the student reviewed a homework sheet that introduced basic concepts of the Cartesian coordinate system (x's and y's, and reflecting across axes). I gave her several problems testing %'s, fractions, and decimals. While the student is very comfortable with mental multiplication, mental division is more difficult for her, which can be an impediment to working easily with fractions and their %, as well as decimal counterparts. We'll continue to work on mental division and fractions, along with her school subjects. With writing, we looked at several work samples, and began to record in her school notebook some basic rules that had been tripping her up (their vs there, to vs too) along with examples. We began to work on simplifying sentences, keeping them short when possible, and discussed essay structure at a high level. These are areas to continue to work on. Overall, it's apparent that the student is extremely bright and with work on some of these areas, she should see much improvement. She also appears to have a great attitude about schoolwork in general, and was amenable to taking on some extra homework for our future tutoring sessions.

We covered problem solving with trigonometry, graphs of trigonometric functions, and a bit of statistics. I noticed the student was having trouble with visualization, so I did my best to draw out clear diagrams. At one point I used objects on the table to help visualize something in 3D space.

The student seemed to be unsure with money so first she did some worksheets on pennies, then worked with nickels. By the end she understood that 20 nickels make 100 pennies. Then we read out loud a chapter from her reading book Sophie the Snoop. I asked her questions to help her with her comprehension. We are designing a book together. Tonight she will make all the drawings and tomorrow she will dictate the story to me. She is a great student who is a lot of fun to work with.

Tutoring review by Jack in Piedmont, CA
Good work today. We just about finished going over the Math portion of the ACT. I think we might spend a few minutes next week wrapping up geometry and reviewing trigonometry. The student seemed confident on the questions he has already covered in school, and by the time he takes the test, he should have covered all the info that's going to be on the ACT.

This session was devoted to helping the student study for his upcoming test. The test will cover everything from factoring to synthetic division. Fortunately, he performed well on the quizzes on these topics, so the studying went smoothly. He was able to complete all of the practice problems with minimal supervision.
