Tutoring review by Rex in Rollingwood, TX
In this session, the student and I continued to review for the HSTP test. We focused on two main subjects: series, and language sections. We discussed numerical and symbolic series, and interpreting and predicting series as it pertains to the questions of the test. In addition, we worked on a few of the language sections of the test: punctuation and capitalization, sentence structure and grammar, and writing concepts. He is excellent at series and had no problem seeing the patterns, and his language skills are getting better.

Worked on the student's math homework-- multiplying, factoring, and simplifying polynomial expressions. She is doing quite well, and mostly needed reminders regarding some order of operations rules, and to be more careful with her work.  Worked on a Spanish translation packet and reviewed her verb flashcards.

Today the student and I went over the science section of the ACT, coming up with a strategy in which she reads the graphs only to answer the questions--reading the associated passages only when necessary. This strategy made her timing extremely efficient!

Tutoring review by Jeremy in Rollingwood, TX
The student  and I began the session going over the vocabulary words I had previously assigned him. We didn't spend much time on this, as planned, and dove right into critical reading. Most of the session was taken up by going over the various types of critical reading questions, and strategies for several types of passages. We did several example passages, and by the end of the session  the student  seemed confident in a technique we worked out to help him be able to finish long passages faster. At the end of the session, we did a short lesson on probability and principles of counting and finished off with strategies and an example passage from the multiple-choice writing section.

Tutoring review by Karen in Rollingwood, TX
Since this was our first meeting, the student and I spent some time going over a sample essay that she wrote about quickly. We talked basically about the parts of the essay, and what elements should be in each part (we will do more with this in the coming weeks). We also went over papers that she wrote for Physics and English class, and she needs to work on her descriptive writing. I sent her two descriptive essay prompts for her to choose one to work on for next week, so that we can go over these skills more.

We continued going over the practice tests as well as specific concepts. In particular, Line Spectra, quantized energy levels, electron configuration and quantum numbers, thermochemistry, and general techniques with which to approach a problem. The student is becoming much more confident and familiar with the material.
