I earned my PhD in Physiology from Dartmouth and taught Physiology for more than 20 years at the college level. I have found that an important aspect of tutoring is to find out right away what the student does and doesn't know in a judgement free manner. Once these obstacles are identified, we can then execute a plan customized for each student. I have found this approach to be very successful in the past.
