Tutoring review by Michael in Sumner, WA
This was a very intensive session. This program could best be described as applied and cultural approaches to math. This is custom to the family. The children are 10 and 12. We began by introducing numbers in various cultures and uses: Roman, Mayan, and Arabic. Tallies arguably were first. We then moved from a five grouped slash marked tallies into the Roman numerals: I,II,III,IV,V,VI. We held at six. I jaunted over to the bookshelf and choose a book. The book's preface was numbered with Roman numerals. We counted. We then acknowledged the lack of a zero placeholder. Books don't have a page numbered zero and the Romans never accounted for one either. The Mayans however did. We briefly glanced through Mayan numerals online. Various tangents would bubble up noticeably as my students are young and good spirited. When they did, I would break into discussion with one student or another and begin writing addition and multiplication problems: 2x2, 2x3, 5x7, 4+7, 9+7, 0x4. No double digit problems were tested. I would simply continue the conversation and hand off mini-quizzes. They accepted the challenge and we're excited by the flow of the session. When this became wearisome, I used my watch as a new system. In our next session I would like to approach the idea of a line and move towards polygons. Formulas will be presented as well as 10x10 multiplication tables. Repetition and familiarity will breed learning of the table, not memorization. The mini-quizzes will be switched for Sudoku. Lastly, dice and simple permutations will be discussed and provided. These six topics will make up the majority of the first 2 weeks to 1st month's unit. Applications will be explored in detail.

Tutoring review by Sara in Sumner, WA
The student grade came up! I'm so happy for her! I knew she could do it because she always does so well with math during the sessions. I am so glad that her grade reflects her abilities. Today we worked on a little math just to make sure we covered everything in the last chapter of her book. We then did some reading. She read two passages about weather (extreme weather and meteorology). She answered reading comprehension questions about the passages. She did very well with all of these topics. We also spent a little time talking about her summer reading project. She decided on a book to read, and we talked through a schedule to finish the project. She did very well today and was very excited for the end of school!

During today's session, we studied for the student's math test by reviewing all of the word problems throughout the chapter (chapter 3). We also had a short review of multiplication facts. Per the student's mother, she would like for us to begin working to "fill the gaps" as evidenced by the student's school assessment, which focuses on 4th grade content standards.
