The student and I worked on solving rational equations. Conceptual, He is prepared for his test on Wednesday. Most of his errors occurred between steps, not in the math itself, but in the interpretation of written expressions. Some mistakes while solving problems were miscopying problem/steps and misassociation of negative signs in front of fractions with binomial numerators. We discussed methods of organizing side work in columns, and creating parenthesis around large fractions to avoid confusion of which terms are affected by negative signs.

The student and I first went over the practice problems I left for her on Monday. She did well with multiplying decimal numbers, but had some trouble with dividing mixed numbers. So we invested this session in reviewing the steps involved with that operation. I will continue to giving her these types of practice problems until these steps are ingrained in her.

The student and I spent this session time reviewing ACT Critical Reading practice questions. We worked on drawing inferences and making generalizations about both humanities and natural science passages. During our previous sessions she and I have reviewed various skimming techniques and other tricks to cut down the amount of time spent on longer passages. Today we worked on putting those techniques to use, and discussed which types of questions work best with which techniques/ approaches. For example, for an ACT question that asks you to fill in a blank, it can be helpful to look through the answer choices before skimming the passage. She told me she has been using the app to review flashcards, which I think is a great idea!
