The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

5th Grade Reading Tutoring FAQ

If you are looking for 5th grade reading tutoring for your child, get in touch with Varsity Tutors. We can help you connect with a professional, highly qualified instructor who is well-versed in the knowledge and skills that your 5th grader needs to know. Since private instruction is available both online and in-person, you can take advantage of the flexibility and convenience that it allows. The professional help that a private mentor provides offers many benefits over having your child review alone, whether they are struggling with analyzing how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text; or are having a hard time explaining how a series of chapters fit together to provide the overall structure of a particular story.

What benefits are provided by working with 5th grade reading tutors?

One major benefit to studying alongside a private instructor is the one-on-one attention students can receive. In a traditional classroom environment, teachers must adhere to a specific curriculum that needs to be completed within a school semester. Too often, this does not give them much time to help individual students work through subjects they find difficult, such as describing how a speaker's or narrator's viewpoint influences how events are described. When your child works with an academic instructor, however, they can spend as much time as needed to walk your child through specific topics such as figuring out the meaning of words and phrases by using context clues.

During 5th grade reading tutoring, the private mentor can implement different teaching techniques when addressing a topic your child finds challenging. For instance, if your child is more adept at learning through short lectures and interactive discussions, their mentor can walk them through explaining how an author uses evidence and reasons to support specific points in a text. When an instructor uses methods that align best with a student's individual learning style, it can help engage the student with the material so they can understand it more thoroughly.

Students of all skill levels can benefit from the interaction they get with an experienced reading instructor. If, for example, your 5th grader is attempting to solidify his or her abilities in reading grade-level prose and poetry out loud, their instructor can give immediate feedback and help guide them in the moment. This live interaction and insightful feedback your child will get during personal reading tutoring is something that is difficult to obtain with self-study.

It is simpler than you might think to give your child the chance to participate in 5th grade reading tutoring. No matter if you decide on in-person or online tutoring, you can arrange a convenient time and place for your child's sessions. In-person mentoring can happen anytime that fits your schedule and anywhere that's comfortable. With online sessions, you can make use of our Live Learning Platform. This is a digital classroom where your child will use video chat, a virtual whiteboard, and other features for their face-to-face reading sessions. The instructor and your child can hear, see, and speak with each other in real time. All you need is a reliable connection to the Internet and a mobile device, tablet, or laptop.

Online 5th Grade Reading Tutoring review by Hannah
The student and I read more of his book about the boy with the skull deformity. He and I worked mostly an angles. He has math to complete, a lot of which he can do without me, so we picked 1 topic and did the problems from levels 3 through 8 in that same subject and I showed him how to solve the tougher problems from levels 7 to 8. He will work on clearing out all the levels 3 and 4 problems, which he could do without help, and we'll work on harder ones next week.

I conducted a reading assessment with the student and discovered that he is reading on a 4th grade level. Our goal is to get him reading on a 5th grade level. He has difficulty with fluency and vocabulary, however, his overall comprehension is fairly good. I will work on specific reading passages with the student and ask him comprehension questions using textual evidence and writing skills. I will also ask him to read out loud for me at each session so that I can work on his confidence and reading fluency. I have also suggested an interactive reading website for him to work on during his own time.

In this session, since the student has finished 4th grade, we worked through a non-fiction, 5th grade passage, and a fiction, 5th grade passage. We worked on different strategies, to keep track of what is being read. Additionally, he answered common core aligned questions, that were multiple choice and written response.
