Tonight we split up the student's session into thirds: 1) He took the practice social studies test I created and got a B+/A- on it. I feel good about that as it was fill in the blank and his real one will be multiple choice; 2) We worked on his math homework for the night; and 3) The argumentative writing prompt that I gave him dealt with his social studies he needs to know for the test tomorrow. We did the outline tonight and he's working on the rough draft for next week. He's also going to see if either his social studies teacher, English teacher, or both will take his final copy for extra credit.

Today the student worked on her Social Studies midterm. She had three questions to answer in essay form. She worked on two of them. One was comparing and contrasting the colonies and one was about the causes leading up to the revolution. For both of these, she had the research already done and she mostly needed to bring her thoughts together. She said that she does well in the subject and needs more help writing her thoughts clearly. We talked about writing effective essays. She also has to do a PowerPoint presentation on a court case. She had some research on it already done, so she did some more and then outlined what she would need for her presentation. She found good research and knows what she wants to say. Before we meet again tomorrow she is going to edit the essays and show them to her teacher.

The student and I continued our focus on reading comprehension, but this week, at the request of his mom, in the context of his social studies reading. We worked our way through a section of his textbook on The Constitution and the structure of the American government. We went through the text slowly and spent a lot of time discussing the material and asking/answering questions. He seemed to benefit from working through it in this way. Vocabulary is still an issue for him, but we will continue to work on this in future sessions.

The student told me that she scored 100% on her science quiz this week. I'm very happy with this progress, based on the material we covered last week. She had social studies homework to work on during this session. We discussed her vocabulary words, which covered "populations", and came up with visual representations of the words. She has two projects that will be due on February 12th, and I encouraged her to work on these steadily until then.
