Varsity Tutors offers a Buffalo SAT class that could help you improve your test-taking skills and increase your confidence as you near the date of your college entrance exam. The SAT is one of the tests that is used by colleges and universities as part of the admissions process when you apply for enrollment. Many high school students, such as those attending Williamsville East High School and Canisius High School, may choose to take the SAT. The score of your SAT may be a deciding factor on whether or not you are admitted to your preferred university, and, for that reason, it is important to find a test preparation class that will help give you an opportunity to perform your best on exam day.
What are the sections tested on the SAT?
The SAT is comprised of Math, Reading, and Writing and Language sections, and each portion is scored separately. These individual scores are then compiled together to form your overall test score. There is also an optional SAT Essay question that you can take on the test. Varsity Tutors offers a Buffalo SAT course in order to help students that may be struggling to understand the test in any of these areas. It can also provide a better understanding of the test content, techniques for studying for the test, and offer additional insight into what you can expect on the day of the exam.
The total time allotted for the SAT examination is 3 hours, with an additional 50 minutes that is added for the completion of the optional SAT Essay portion of the test. The required test questions are set up in a multiple-choice style, and your total score is based on the number of correct answers. Test-takers on not penalized for incorrect answers which most students see as good news. If you run short on time in a particular section, you can at least make a quick guess for the missing answers. Your score will not be impacted if you are wrong.
What does the Buffalo SAT class cover?
But what exactly will you need to study to perform your best on test day? Well, in addition to the strategies and tips you will learn through a prep class, you will also need to study the specific question-structure and content on the exam if you hope to earn your desired score. Let's take a detailed look at how the exam is segmented and what you can expect during each portion.
The Math section has 58 questions and will allow 80 minutes for completion. During this time, you will be tested on your ability to problem-solve and use math related analytical skills to answer questions. Specific subjects you will be faced with include pre-algebra, elementary and intermediate algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Also, it is helpful to note that these questions will be further broken down into two categories. While you will be allowed to use a calculator for one portion of the Math questions, you will be forced to tackle some of the questions with nothing more than a pencil, paper, and your own thoughts.
The Reading section will have questions that review your reading comprehension and reasoning skills. This will involve answering questions from written passages and will include passages that show associated tables, charts, or other graphics that need to be used in your decision-making process. The passages in this section can be about world literature, classic US texts, or contemporary authors' works. Also, some passages may be related to the social science topics of sociology, psychology, economics or other related areas, as well as science topics which may include physics, chemistry, or biology. This section also tests whether you can find evidence in passages to support your answers, offer sound conclusions, and show that you understand how the author presented specific arguments in the text. You will need to know how to identify relationships between the text and the data included in the text in order to show comparable relationships. You will probably come across particular words that you are unfamiliar with in each passage. This will require you to utilize context to pinpoint the passage's meaning and answer any questions correctly.
Similarly, the Writing and Language section will test your ability to understand grammar mistakes, review proper sentence structure, correct given examples of punctuation, and showcase your other skills in written English. There are 44 questions in this section, and there will be 35 minutes to complete all of them. They are all structured in a multiple-choice style that reflect upon the written passages present on the test. Although there will be some tables, graphs and charts that may be included in this section, there is no math in that area.
The optional SAT Essay will assess your ability to write clear, concise, and well-structured sentences in response to a writing prompt. You will want to showcase that you are capable of understanding an argument, formulating an opinion, and support your claims with proper evidence.
What can a student expect from a Buffalo SAT prep course?
Varsity Tutors prides itself of offering high-quality SAT courses to any student that wants to improve their testing abilities. For this reason, we search for talented, expert instructors to lead interactive courses in an online environment. The interactive feature will allow you to directly interact with your instructor and fellow classmates while you are working your way through the course materials. This allows you the ability to ask questions regarding the content and test-segments you find most challenging.
Because the classes are in a completely virtual environment, you will have the freedom to study in whichever location you choose. Do you have a favorite table at your local coffee shop or enjoy studying from the comfort of your own home? Not a problem. All you'll need is an internet connection to participate in the class.
While the majority of the course will be conducted in a group setting, you will have the ability to work through some of your questions in a one-on-one style with your instructor. This is an added benefit that could help you overcome any test areas that you find particularly difficult quicker than if you tried to work through them on your own.
