1st Grade Math Tutoring FAQ

Varsity Tutors can set your child up with 1st Grade Math tutoring in as little as 24 hours. A private instructor is best viewed as a supplement to the education a student receives in the classroom, helping them develop a fuller appreciation for the concepts discussed in class. We strive to make the process as convenient as possible, so we give you a choice between online and in-person meetings to give you control over your student's schedule. Keep reading to learn more about how we might be able to help you.

What Are A Few of the Benefits Associated With 1st Grade Math Tutors?

First-grade mathematics may be a student's first taste of working with numbers. If your student is having a hard time with these foundational concepts, later mathematical subjects are bound to prove frustrating. A private instructor can review all of the topics your child studies in school, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the material. Unfortunately, most classroom instructors lack the flexibility to provide a comparable level of individualized attention to each student.

Every student has a unique learning style, and it's possible that your child's classroom isn't a great fit for them. For example, visual learners usually don't benefit too much from classroom discussions. In contrast, a private instructor can adapt their teaching style to a student's needs. For example, counting cubes or a number line can be great ways to illustrate basic addition and subtraction. Your student can even use larger cubes to represent a "ten," helping them picture the number 12 as the combination of one ten and two ones. If your student is a more hands-on learner, their instructor can provide practice problems until they are comfortable with the material.

Any questions your child asks during a private study session can be answered promptly, allowing any mistakes to be corrected before they become significant learning obstacles. Your student can also establish a personal connection with their academic mentor that makes it easier to ask for help than it might be in a more crowded classroom environment.

Working with 1st Grade Math tutors allows students to work at their own pace. If your child already understands rudimentary geometry, their instructor can concentrate on other subjects to make their study sessions more engaging. Alternatively, an instructor can provide additional explanations and examples if their pupil is having a harder time with a concept.

Young children can have a hard time sitting down and doing homework after a long day of school, so your child's instructor can reinforce mathematical concepts through educational games to make learning more fun. For example, counting toys can be a simple yet effective way of making counting feel more engaging.

We also try to make meeting an instructor as accessible as possible. If you opt for digital study sessions, your student will get to use our exclusive Live Learning Platform, an online classroom that leverages cool features such as a virtual whiteboard and video chat to create a personal classroom experience anywhere with a strong internet connection. Alternatively, an instructor can meet your child at their school library or even your own home for maximal convenience. The choice is yours.

Online 1st Grade Math Tutoring review by Allysa
During this session, the student and I worked on telling time. I made an analog clock for her to practice with that included the minutes (05, 10, etc.) next to the numbers they correspond to (1, 2, etc.). We played a game where she had to tell the time on the digital clock, then form that time on her analog clock, and then see if it was on her game board. The game and the analog clock were both left for her to continue to practice and use. She was focused for the whole hour and appeared to be learning, while having fun at the same time.

Student 1 and I spent some time going over categorizations and "which one does not belong?" He's very good at this, and solved some very challenging problems. His focus was good. Student 2 is doing a good job with identifying patterns and determining the missing pieces in her shape logic problems.
