I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

Hi there. I love teaching! I currently teach at both DeVry and University of Phoenix on ground, Houston campuses. At DeVry, where I have worked since 2008, I am currently adjunct faculty and teach various communication classes as well as help facilitate the Math Labs (Algebra I and II). At University of Phoenix, where I have been teaching since 2005, I served a two year term as Lead Faculty and have earned my Advanced Faculty Certification. In addition, I serve many purposes at UoP. I am involved in mentoring new instructors as well as training faculty on Diversity, training the incoming faculty during their certification process, and I am also involved in interviewing possible candidates as they apply for teaching positions. I teach many different courses at UoP, including general studies, critical thinking, various writing and communication courses and public speaking. I love working at both schools. Teaching is the best job I have ever had, which is why tutoring is such a natural progression for me.

I am so excited to be working for Varsity Tutors and for having the opportunity to help individual students achieve their educational goals. I have a Bachelor’s of Arts in Radio-Television (I work in film production for a little while) and a Master of Arts in Mass Communication, both from the University of Houston. I have a strong background in public relations and marketing, which I still do on a freelance basis. I love to write and have written everything from music to poetry (I even got published a couple of times and won an award) to articles to – well, you name, I can write it! I also love to play/write/listen to music. I have been a musician since I was about 3 or 4, starting off by playing “Jingle Bells” by ear on a little organ my dad brought home for me one day. Once that happened, I was off! I have played (at some point or another) keyboards, guitar, flute, tenor saxophone, bass guitar, hand bells, and have even tried my hand at harmonica. I studied dance for 13 years growing up (ballet, tap, jazz) and have continued to dance in some form or fashion since the age of 3. My love of dance and exercise has lead to my love of Tae Kwon Do, which I have been involved in since 2008. I hope to teach Tae Kwon Do one day as well.

I look forward to meeting new students and parents and helping the students I tutor not only achieve their educational goals, but exceed them!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is simple and effective: learning should be fun. Yes, it is important to learn relevant information to help one achieve his or her future goals. Yes, it is important that academic rigor be maintained throughout the learning process so that the information being relayed becomes meaningful to the student, thus enhancing the learning situation and enabling long-term learning to take place. All of these things can take place in a stoic and stringent environment to some extent, but when the environment is one of fun and excitement, the long-term effects and relevant applications students make between the material and their own personal experiences increase exponentially. Using various outside resources such as videos, activities, apps, and new technology enhances the student's learning experience and adds fun and excitement to the learning process. Additionally, this type of teaching accommodates more learning styles than traditional methods, thus, enabling more students to retain the information and get more value for their college dollars.
