For the last twenty-four years, I have played a small but crucial part in the essential business of educating our youth. One child at a time, I have poured countless hours and energy into helping children find the missing piece of the puzzle, the answer to a hard math problem, the easiest way to remember the equation, and how to pronounce each and every word until we have reached the end of the chapter. This work has given me great joy. I am not only validated but also truly excited when I see the light go on in each childs head after a long struggle of learning and practicing.
Over the years, I have worked as a substitute teacher, homebound instructor, and home tutor in the tri-state area for children from kindergarten to college. I have worked in all math levels, Spanish, French, all science levels, English, reading, and ESL. I have also worked with at-risk youth and students the school districts have deemed/determined developmentally disabled in one way or another. In addition to assisting in learning, I have also prepared lesson plans, conducted experiments, prepared and administered weekly exams and midterms, and had control over an entire class as a substitute teacher. These experiences have enhanced my ability to assess what a student needs on an individual level and provide the proper approach to overcoming their stumbling blocks. Further, working with children and young adults of all ages has provided me with an edge in serving each student. For example, the college students I work with are often working on degrees for a second career. They have been working for years and are now transitioning back into being a student. Working with younger students (and having two college-age children of my own), along with juggling tutoring with my full time job has helped me to know exactly how to assist these students in balancing work and school and getting back into the swing of things such as homework and studying.
It gives me great joy to work with a new student, one day at a time, to reach their full potential. I am eager to continue my work in helping students and contribute to their success.
