I recently completed my Master's program at Columbia for the the teaching of Social Studies, so I have spent a year teaching in a classroom setting. Prior to that, I have tutored on a more informal level in different subjects. My most rewarding experience came when I volunteered in high school to work one-on-one with an autistic elementary school child who I taught how to play chess. He showed a real interest for the game, but no one in his family knew how to play. I went there once a week to play games with him and give instruction.
I am dedicated to becoming an educator and tutoring offers a unique opportunity to reach students on a more personal level than they can typically be reached in large classroom settings. While I have nothing against the classroom, I look forward to every chance I have to make direct connections with students and to help them achieve their academic goals. I am a genuinely curious person, and I find every individual's story fascinating and worthy of my time. Tutoring affords me the opportunity to give them this time.
In terms of what I like to tutor, I have always loved taking standardized tests, as I viewed them as fun exercises in spotting tricks. I excelled at the SAT, and I would love to impart my understanding of the exam onto students who approach it with trepidation. I can help with all three sections, and I know the dynamics of the test (what are the categories of questions, what are the typical multiple choice pitfalls, how people should pace themselves, etc.)
With regard to specific subjects, I initially began college as a Math major before switching to Political Science. I got all the way to Modern Algebra (group theory) before making the change, so I feel pretty comfortable with high school level Math. From years of experience in this field, I understand that Math is a participatory sport that people learn by lots of doing. I can help you or your child build the skills and experience needed to master this subject.
Also, I love chess. Love it. I used to be nationally ranked, and I still play online in my free time. It is a great way to keep your mind active while having fun. I would be happy to play any student of mine if they are interested in this as well.
