Andrew

Certified Tutor

I have taught at the middle school and college levels. I am currently preparing to teach an Academic Foundations course at USF, which helps first-year college students acclimate to campus, emphasizing study skills, transitional issues and career planning. I am a great tutor, because I believe in creating a one-on-one tailored experience for each student. With my advising and classroom students, I use formal and informal assessments to ensure students are meeting learning outcomes, and adjust methods accordingly. I also help students develop better critical thinking skills to help them achieve academic success.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know each other better at first, and then jump into some of the issues creating challenges.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By helping the student understand how to be take initiative, and helping them craft a unique learning plan for themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

We would work together to create an incentive. I also firmly believe in mixing things up and presenting information in new ways with every session.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

We would link it to the real world and find examples all around us of the problem. Understanding what the question is actually asking is often the hardest part.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Help students break things down into smaller bits to ensure that they are able to comprehend the information, and then put it all back together.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Find out what interests them and try to teach the material using examples that relate to them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find out how this subject is impacting something they enjoy. There is a lot of math in football (for example)!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Informal and formal assessments.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Helping them put the information to practice. Having them teach me something next time, as teaching is on the one the strongest ways of learning.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Use data from their testing, and also start by asking the student what areas they feel they could use the most help in.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Based on the student's need, it would be critical to create a customized approach to their learning objectives.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Technology, pen, paper, whiteboards.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that every student is capable of achieving greatness, and that a part of my job is helping the student to understand their potential. Celebrating wins and losses, I'm able to adequately challenge the student and support them in achieving academic success.
