What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that a person can learn ANYTHING with the right application to their own life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I introduce myself, tell some things about myself and my experiences, and let the student tell me more about them and what they struggle with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by giving them easy strategies that have helped me throughout my years of schooling so far.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I can help a student stay motivated by making the learning fun, finding games/ activities that teach the lesson in a fun way.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I will first rewind and try to restate what was said in a different way. Then, if that does not work, we will go through an example problem to analyze each step to work towards getting the correct answer.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When I begin working with a student, I ask them what problems give them the most trouble or what concepts they do not understand, and we begin from there.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

A technique I would use to make sure a student understands material is to quiz them randomly on key terms or problems that gradually get harder.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A student's confidence can be bolstered as they accurately answer questions and understand how to attack problems. To build their confidence, I would give them easy ways to attack problems and ensure they are familiar with different keywords to look for or different ways to do the exact same problem, if applicable.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by asking them questions. For example, I would ask them what they think they need help with or what they feel they do not understand enough to explain to someone else.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

During a tutoring session, we can use the materials available, but normally a computer should be helpful.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Students who struggle with reading comprehension normally just have nothing to relate it to in their own lives. I would find things in their own lives that relate to the topic we are reading about.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Humans love to be rewarded for getting a correct answer. To help a student get excited about learning, I can introduce rewards (candy, pencils, trinkets) for getting correct answers when I quiz them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I can start by asking a student how they prefer to learn, do they like to take notes? Do they like hands-on activities? Then after they answer, I can do activities based on that.
