What is your teaching philosophy?

In working with my students, my philosophy is to meet the students where they are, and advance them in incremental steps where they can be advancing and successful. Some refer to this as the "zone of proximal" development.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask them questions about the content they work with and why they might be having difficulty. If they are students who are in school or recently graduated high school, I might ask them activities they have participated in that might allow me to relate the content to them a little better.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help students become independent learners by strengthening them in areas that they struggle in. Once we are able to address any struggles that they might have, we build strength on a topic by repetition, and advance their understanding by giving them more complex questions on the topic.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By challenging them to advance their current understanding to a more rigorous level of knowledge.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break the skill into smaller units to find out where the struggle lies, and then address the misconception or difficulty at the place it causes the most problems.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Analyze vocabulary and the context of the items in which they are struggling.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Repetition on topics where they struggle, and having the student verbalize where there point of difficulty is.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By showing them that there are areas where they can be successful, and letting them know that their success is closer than they think it is.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I tend to address students from a variety of learning perspectives, so that they get multiple opportunities to attain mastery on a particular topic.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By working with them methodically so that they begin to trust in their own ability to accomplish their goal.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By evaluating their written work and then talking to them about their work and what they do and do not understand.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the way I feel the student will learn best.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Usually I use the materials that students bring with them to the tutoring session.
