I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Casey

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate student working towards a doctorate degree in physical therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Before that, I received my B.A. in Psychology at The Ohio State University. I was fortunate enough to be a tutor for 2 years at SASSO (Student-Athlete Support Services Office), where I tutored student-athletes in a wide variety of courses and subjects. I was also a coach for both gymnastics and track for a few years, and I tutored in the National Honor Society in high school. I love helping people (hence my future profession), and I really enjoy helping people learn where I struggled once before. I have been tutoring for years, and I really enjoy watching the people I tutor grow in understanding, and I love when they start to take joy in doing well academically.

I am an avid grammar fan. I love writing, reading, and grading papers. I tested out of English in college, and I have submitted so many papers in all different formats over my time at Ohio State that I could not even begin to count them. English was also a subject I tutored frequently at SASSO, so I am very prepared to aide in all aspects of the subject. I have a strong foundation in multiple choice exams and test-taking strategies. I really like to stress a knowledge of material, but I also am very big on studying smarter, not harder.

Additionally, graduate school has prepared me very well for subjects such as anatomy and physiology. I would venture to say that I am proficient in these subjects, and I am more than capable of helping you learn these subjects for life. Please let me know if my strengths might meet your needs, and we can certainly work out times and dates for tutoring. This is for your learning, and the process should really revolve around you!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During the first session, I take about a half hour to get to know my student. The information I am looking to gather includes academic and personal goals, some personal information like hobbies and interests, and game plans and strategies. I feel that it is important to explain why I am approaching tutoring the way I am, and I find that it helps students to be more motivated if they can understand the why of things. After we take some time to get to know each other and discuss goals, we will begin going over material. This portion includes a variety of different styles, depending on the subject we are discussing. However, I like to begin a first session with having a student explain to me their struggles with the material and what they want to go over in our first session. After that, we will begin the tutoring process, and I will start taking over lesson plans once I get a better idea of the goals. Finally, I want to let the student know that tutoring will revolve around his or her needs. I want my student to give input into what parts they like about sessions, and what is or is not helping them learn. I like to create lesson plans with my student at the end of each session, so both the student and I know what to expect in the coming sessions.
