What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I believe goal setting is very important in the first session. A clear set of goals will help make sure I provide the necessary support for the student to progress. Once the goals have been established, I will assess the student's current performance level in order to generate a plan of action. If the student has a pressing assignment, we will make sure to tackle that as well. I also make note of the student's preferred learning methods so I can tailor my instruction to the student.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I believe a tutor's job is to provide skills and not answers. By assessing what skills are missing and teaching those, the student will be able to excel. Normally, a struggling student is missing a basic skill that is causing the current material to seem more difficult. Once the student is proficient in the basic skill, the new skill will become easier, eventually allowing the student to work independently. Other students may struggle with content due to learning disabilities. I have extensive experience tutoring students with learning disabilities, and can provide various techniques to improve their classroom performance.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Setting small attainable goals will help students stay motivated. I also use verbal praise and positive comments for even the smallest achievements. If the student is focused on climbing the mountain, they will often fall down, overwhelmed. However, if we just focus on a few steps, they will make it to the top of the mountain before they even know it.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student is having trouble learning a concept, I will begin by presenting the material differently. I will make sure to pay special attention to the student's learning style. If the trouble continues, I will assess if a basic skill is missing. Once that basic skill is addressed, the new material will seem more clear.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
One of my favorite techniques to assess comprehension is to have the student teach the concept. If the student knows the material well enough to teach me, then they have mastered the content.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I will use all resources available to assess the student's needs. This includes graded coursework as well as a quick assessment that I will give the student. Input from the student, parents, and teachers will also help me gauge the student's needs.
