I am a passionate, experienced teacher with excellent references. I have been teaching for the past ten years in Miami Florida and just moved back to Fairfield County where I grew up and attended school. While I am a social studies teacher, I have tutored a variety of subjects. I am constantly looking for new teaching resources and strategies. My students have placed in the top 10 of all middle schools in Florida (over 2,500) on their state-administered Civics exam. I have also been rated "highly qualified" by my previous school and district with a perfect score the last two years.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I am a firm believer in differentiated instruction, which incorporates a variety of activities and lessons in order to cater to different learner types. In a one-on-one setting, I work tirelessly to determine what type of learning style your child accelerates at, in order to maximize their accomplishments.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I think it is important to set realistic goals with a student and to LISTEN to them as to what their expectations are. I also like to communicate these goals with a student's parents to ensure that we are all on the same page.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching students how to become better learners is one of the most important aspects that an instructor can impart on a student. This goes back to a previous question about setting appropriate goals, but it is so much more. Learning strategies and techniques is something that is often overlooked in a classroom setting, and can be an incredibly beneficial aspect of one-on-one tutoring.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I believe it is important to lead by example when pushing students to stay motivated. This is where my passion for learning and life is beneficial and contagious on the students I work with. I work with students to look beyond the day-to-day grind of school, and to consider the "big picture" of where they want to take their education.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Student difficulties require the instructor to research different techniques and strategies for a student to master a skill or concept. There are usually many different paths to mastery, and it is the instructor's job to find that path!
