I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I have taught high school and college math since 1992. I've also tutored private students during most of that time. I love to work with students who struggle or don't like math very much. I like to go through things very slowly and not skip steps. I help students build confidence by breaking topics into small sections and rewarding each achievement.

I love math, but I understand that many people don't. My main concern is getting students through the math needed to achieve their goals. Too often, math is a barrier to a great career. Some students need to build a base for more math in the future, but many students just need to survive so that they can get a degree or certification.

I have written the content for three online college-level textbooks in algebra, finite math, and math for liberal arts. I am currently completing a test review manual for the TEAS V. The TEAS V is used as an entrance exam for many nursing schools. It covers math, science (anatomy, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and physiology), English grammar, and reading comprehension, The book is scheduled to be published in December 2015. I have worked as a test scorer for the GRE, California Standards Test, and the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE).

What is your teaching philosophy?

Not every student is talented in math, but every student can learn math.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I like to work through problems slowly and step-by-step. If a student is struggling, I encourage him/her to memorize the basic steps. Sometimes a saying, or writing down the steps before doing it, clarifies the problem.
