Brock

Certified Tutor

I recently graduated with a double major in Economics and Government from Bowdoin College. I look forward to tutoring high school math, science, and reading, as well as specific ACT and SAT prep! I have always loved working with people, especially students. I have done a wide variety of activities related to teaching: I led a Special Olympics Organization at my school, taught swimming lessons to all ages, coached a swim team, coached other sports, and have tutored younger students. I really enjoyed standardized tests when I was in high school and have a lot of practice helping others with them. I am excited to figure out how to help more students meet their goals!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to guide learning. I want to watch the student attempt various similar problems before I jump in and help. That way, I know that we are not just going through the motions.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I would focus on getting to know each other a little bit and talking through problems. For instance, I would closely watch and listen to the student's thought processes before I jump in and help.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By not giving away too much immediately. I always learned best by working through things myself with encouragement and small hints or tricks from the teacher.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Talk about the reasons why this subject is important for what they want to do in the future, whether that be more advanced subjects or a job.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Talk through problems out loud. I would do a few, going slowly and speaking my thought process, then I would ask them to do the same.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Students that are struggling with reading comprehension should start by practicing reading out loud. I would have them read it to themselves, then read out loud to me, then explain what happened in their own words after each paragraph.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Setting small goals immediately and getting on the same page so we can achieve them!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Talk to them about their interests and future courses they want to take. Once I understand their interests, I can talk about how that subject plays into those interests.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

One of the best ways to make sure a student understands the material is to have them teach it back to me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Setting small goals so that we can incrementally make progress and know that we are improving!
