Certified Tutor

I received my undergraduate degree from West Chester University. I majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Reading. In May 2014, I earned my Master's Degree from Cabrini College in Elementary Education. I am certified in: Elementary Education (K-6), Middle School English (7-9) and Middle School Mathematics (7-9). Most of my teaching experience has been with prekindergarten, 2nd, 3rd and 5th grade.

I love helping my students achieve their own academic success! I take the time to learn about my students and their personal learning styles, needs and preferences. I often incorporate various learning tools, such as manipulatives, white boards, highlighting tape, flashcards, etc. to help my students grasp the concepts. If a student is not grasping a certain concept, I will present the information in an alternative manner in order for my student to understand the material.

I currently teach 3rd grade and love every subject! As a teacher, my favorite part of the day is reading out loud to my students. I love to share my passion of reading with my students through a variety of genres, authors and levels of literature. I take pride in helping my students become lifelong readers with strong reading comprehension skills.

I have tutored students in each of the elementary grades with significant focus on English Language Arts and Math. Most of the students I have tutored have been in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. In addition to tutoring during the school year, I also have tutored students over the summer. Some of the areas we focused on were summer reading projects (reading novels and improving reading comprehension), phonics and grammar. We also practiced various writing styles and how to add detail to writing. Helping my students with math was also a significant aspect of both summer and school year tutoring. We worked on various topics in math such as: multiplication and division, fractions, geometry, basic algebra, and word problems. In addition to Math and English Language Arts, I also have tutored students in Science, Social Studies, and Study Skills/ Test Preparation.

Outside of school, I love to go for long runs on scenic trails! I also enjoy other areas of health and fitness. I have a passion for cooking (and a little baking) and enjoy experimenting with new recipes. When I am not busy in the kitchen, I enjoy trying new local restaurants with my friends and family. My dog, Taffy loves when we spend time in the yard playing fetch with her ball or a new stick!

I look forward to working with you and your child to help them be successful in school!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I strive to meet the needs of each of my students. Each child learns differently, and it is my mission as a professional educator to give them the necessary tools to be successful learners!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I would like to learn more about my student. For instance, what type of learner is he? Does he respond to visual aids? Perhaps the student is an auditory learner.
I also ask my student about their favorite and least favorite subjects so I can gain a better understanding of where he or she may need extra support. Finally, I may ask the student what he or she thinks is hard in school and what is "easy."

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

My goal is to build confidence with each student. I may give them extra support in the beginning and model what independent learning looks like. As the student progresses, I may ask him or her to become more accountable for their own work by solving problems on their own, or reading a passage on their own before we work together as a team.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help a student stay motivated by learning about their likes, hobbies, and interests. I try my best to incorporate their interests with my daily teaching and/or tutoring. In the classroom, I use their likes and interests as positive reinforcement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will try teaching the skill or concept with a different approach and revisit the learning styles of my students to see if I can help them grasp the concept in another way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I often use highlighting tape, highlighters, post-it notes, and "EZ Reader Bookmarks" to help my students read. We often pause after reading important sentences or paragraphs and discuss what we read. I also utilize the various comprehension skills such as predictions, compare and contrast, and drawing conclusions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Visual aids have been extremely helpful. I will use whiteboards, highlighting tape, flashcards, graphic organizers, etc.
