My passion is to help people to better understand where they are and what it will take to get them where they want to go. I possess an arsenal of strategies to help students to grasp information and the patience to help them succeed in processing and utilizing that information. I have over 12 years of teaching students with special needs. I graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Masters of Education degree. I have had several opportunities to tutor students. I believe that all students can learn and I love to help them to discern how they learn best. Once they have that information it allows them to be able to guide their own learning. I enjoy helping students learn to read and learn how to master math as well. I would love to help your student with reading, writing, or math. I also am interested in helping students to learn better study skills or to prepare for tests.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself and ask them some questions to get to know them a little bit. Depending on what we need to work on, we might begin with some preliminary work to see what level they are at.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The way that I have found to be successful to ensure independent learning is to boost confidence. If a student feels like they can complete the task, they will want to not only complete it but to expand on it.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student stay motivated by showing them their success. It's the small steps that help to make the great leaps, and if they can see that they are capable of the small steps, they will want to continue.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student has difficulty with a skill or concept, I always begin with trying to see what they do know. If I have tried to explain it one way and they don't understand, then it's important to try it another way. Saying it the same way twenty times will not help the student understand it any better than they did the first time.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Helping students who are struggling with reading comprehension takes lots of practice first and foremost, but I also like to have them think about questions as they read, such as "Who's the story about?," "Where is it taking place?," "What are they doing?," etc.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The strategy that I have found to be most successful is to talk to students. I need to know what motivates them, what their interests are, and what they struggle with or just plain don't like.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
The way that I help students get excited/engaged is to try and gear lessons to involve things that they are interested in. If they struggle with reading, then let's read about something they like.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
When determining what a student understands, asking is usually a good first step. I also watch as students work specific problems to find the point where they get stuck.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I help to build a student's confidence in a subject by breaking the task down into more manageable parts. As they complete each part, it shows them that they are able to do the work.

I evaluate a student's needs based on what they say, as well as what I see as we are working together.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The materials that I typically use during a tutoring session will depend on the student and how they learn. Some student's will require some hands-on practice, while others just need to hear it one more time or maybe said another way.
What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy is that all students can learn. It's my job to help them figure out how they can do that best.
