What is your teaching philosophy?
All students can learn. Each student is an individual and each student learns in the way that is best for them. These learning styles include: visual, auditory and tactile learners.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During our first session, I would like to find out what we need to work on and evaluate the student's strengths and weaknesses in this area.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I like to work with students and teach them skills and techniques that they are comfortable enough to use on their own to help them become independent learners.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I will work with them on lessons that will challenge them, without making it so difficult that they will become discouraged.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Reteach the skill or concept using different techniques or methods to get to the desired outcome.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would use different levels of reading passages to help raise the confidence and vocabulary level of the student. I would also present readings in different ways, including reading to the student as well as having the student read aloud.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
To assess which areas they need the most help in as well as finding out which areas they are most comfortable.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would get them engaged by starting at a level that they can succeed. Then I will gradually make it more difficult. This way the student can feel successful and able to reach their goal.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I will demonstrate what they need to do, do it with them, and then have them do the task independently, to make sure they are able to do it.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By bringing them to a more advanced level gradually, making sure they can master each level we work at.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I present them with material and I have them work on it. I evaluate whether or not they are able to do it easily, with difficulty or struggling.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I evaluate the best method for helping my student. Some students need more practice in certain areas;, some need the material presented in several different ways. Whatever seems to be the best way for my student, is what I will do. If that doesn't work, I will change my presentation.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Online sessions, I use learning tools from the tutor website, as well as adding material of my own. I always ask my student if they have any materials they wish to use. In person, I bring material, or if the student has their own, I use that and supplement it with mine.
